When icid-tongued Blanche Hunt bluntly stated grandaughter Tracy Barlow's roots were as dark as her soul, she wasn't kidding.

Kate Ford, 47, has transformed Tracy into one of the most memorable baddies in soap history. Let's not forget this is the woman who pretended she had slept with Roy Cropper, fathering his child to cruelly reveal Amy was actually Steve McDonald's and not his - before trying to flog her to the cafe owner and his wife Hayley.

Then of course she battered builder Charlie Stubbs to death before somehow being allowed out to make life a misery for the rest to Weatherfield. She's calmed, but not totally changed. Lately she's been sleeping with Steve idol Tommy Orpington, a retired footballer, who returns to the scene and starts an affair with her.

Life off scene could never measure up to what florist Tracy has thrown around and Kate has a much quieter life at home than her character does on screen. On Instagram, she often posts about her life, she recently shared how she's dealing with the cold winter weather. She posted a picture from a chilly outdoor walk, all bundled up.

Her Coronation Street friends were quick to compliment her on the post. Georgie Taylor, who plays Toyah Habeeb, commented "Gorgeous!" and Sally Carman, known as Abi Webster on the show, called her a "Beauty." Kate replied warmly: "Love you. Miss you, see you soon I hope xxx."

She's told us before that she lives in South London with her son Otis, whose dad is producer Jon Connerty. Kate and Jon aren't together anymore, but she's got some famous people living on her street. Back in 2015, she said: "Last year, I spent Christmas with Kate Thornton at her house and she made the most ridiculous amount of food I've ever seen in my life."

She also said: "We live on the same street in London and our boys are really good friends. We're so close, in and out of each other's houses all the time." On Instagram, where Kate likes to let us know what she's up to, she showed us a picture of a cute cat that's just joined her family. She wrote: "Our new family member, we are in love ...#SirWalter."

But it's not always easy for Kate. She's shared on Instagram that she has a tough time with endometriosis, which can be really painful. When she was filming Corrie, she posted: "Filming #itvcorrie this was a few weeks ago at a time that I was struggling with my #endrometriosis."

She added: "Luckily got lots of support x just sending a hug out to all those struggling with similar [heart emoji]." Kate has a serious type of endometriosis, which means she has to deal with pain in different parts of her body, not just her womb. During the first lockdown in June 2020, Kate took to Twitter sharing: "As someone with grade four endometriosis I realise how much I rely on my massage therapy to help with this. Due to Covid I've not been able to visit my therapist for three months. My body is sore I'll never take this therapy for granted again xx"

Off-screen, Kate shares a warm relationship with her co-stars and even sent a loving message to Abi Webster last month. Surprisingly, Kate's first brush with fame came when she was featured in a Beatles video for the song Free As A Bird, back in December 1995.

This tune was originally penned and recorded as a home demo by John Lennon himself way back in 1977. In the video, you can catch a glimpse of Kate during a 1960s street scene. This marked the start of her successful career in television. Most folks recognise her from her role as Tracy, but she's also had parts in shows like Blue Murder and Missing.

Kate has expressed on several occasions how much she enjoys working on Coronation Street; it doesn't look like she'll be packing up any time soon. She once shared: "It's good for me to be at Corrie now, I have good work, and good scripts, and I don't want to lose that.

"When you don't have young children it's easier to make braver choices, but I'm not saying this is an easy option, it's hard work, and I really enjoy it. I'm not a particularly ambitious person. I'm not one of those people who thinks 'by this time I want to have done this and that', the idea of that freaks me right out. Life's too complicated."
