Trigger Point star Vicky McClure has spoken out after a blunder left fans screaming at their TVs.

Vicky's character, Lana Washington, has been front and centre of the popular ITV drama, with the new series having shown us even more death and destruction, including the loss of her partner DCI Thom Youngblood. At the start of the series, Lana returned to London from her secondment, where she was training people in Estonia who were working on the Ukrainian front line.

In the first episode, her talk about the terror threat in London was cut short by a big terror incident just a few minutes away and things have only got worse and worse for the bomb disposal unit as the threat continues to grow.

Since the show has been back on our screens, fans have been complaining about Lana constantly taking her helmet off time and time again when dealing with the bombs. Sharing their thoughts, one fan said: "bugs me that Lana never wears an helmet #TriggerPoint," as a second added: "#TriggerPoint - why does she take her helmet and goggles off when she gets closer to the actual bombs?"

A third wrote: "Catching up with #triggerpoint Not sure why they need to wear helmets right up to the point where they are next to the bomb when they take them off," with a fourth adding: "What is the point of her wearing a helmet if she keeps taking it off when she is near a device.#TriggerPoint." A fifth asked other viewers: "Can anyone explain why Lana takes her protective helmet off every time she approaches a potential explosive device? #triggerpoint."

But now, Vicky has explained why Lana takes off her helmet each time. She told The Mirror and other press: "The helmet thing was a big thing last time everyone was screaming at the telly asking why on earth Lana was taking her helmet off in dangerous situations.

"I had to keep explaining that if she kept it on and the bomb went off that close it wouldn't protect her. If she takes it off, it is less distracting and won't knock a potential device or obscure her vision."

She also had an option to dress in a lighter, costume version of the uniform for the part, or she could wear the exact attire supplied to expos. This latter option is pretty hefty and 'not comfy' at all but Vicky wanted to make it as realistic as possible.

"It's not comfy. It's warm and I hate being cold so that I am always grateful for. There was a choice this season where costume said, 'We could make something for you', because it's so incredibly heavy. I said no, I just feel like I'm an actor, when they shout cut I can just take the helmet off. I think it's important for us to show the real deal," she explained about her decision, "The gear wasn't as accessible for women as most of those uniforms are typically made for men."
