Ben Foster insists Rob McElhenney is the "brains" behind Wrexham's success - as the Welsh club's remarkable rise continues.

It's been three years since Wrexham were bought by McElhenney and his fellow actor Ryan Reynolds. Since then, the team have reached the FA Trophy final - losing to Bromley - and won the National League title to return to the English Football League (EFL).

And Wrexham's journey up the football pyramid shows no signs of slowing down. Phil Parkinson's side are third in League Two - sitting in the final automatic promotion spot - and just three points behind leaders Stockport with a game in hand.

Reynolds, who is one of the most famous movie stars on the planet, has been the face of Wrexham's success. Yet McElhenney also frequently appears at the Racecourse Ground to cheer on Wrexham and has been just as influential in their rise, if not more.

That's according to Foster, who came out of retirement to rejoin Wrexham last year and help them win the National League title. The former Manchester United and England goalkeeper has since explained McElhenney's role in Wrexham's success to talkSPORT.

"Rob is the brains behind it, Rob is fully in," said Foster. "Don't get me wrong they're both fully in but Rob, you can tell this is his baby, genuinely it's his baby, Wrexham is."

On Reynolds, Foster explained: "Ryan, I think at first he joined along for the ride and was like, 'Yeah I'll help you out.' And then he's fallen head over heels in for it as well. He's a bit more relaxed, whereas Rob is, 'No, we want to do something here.'"

Foster also claims Reynolds and McElhenney were not best friends when they teamed up to buy Wrexham. He added: "They didn't even know each other. Before they started the Wrexham thing, (Rob) had never even spoken to (Ryan). He just sort of reached out and said, 'I'm going to do this crazy thing, do you want to be part of it?'"

It's a decision neither McElhenney nor Reynolds regrets, as Wrexham are poised to take another step towards the Premier League this season. They'll be hoping for another three points on Saturday when they travel to Gillingham, who sit eighth in the table.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's game, Parkinson said: "There’s a lot of teams in the play-off mix, it’s a very tight division and Gillingham are obviously still got a very good chance. They’ve been playing 3-5-2 recently and got a good result against Stockport County on Tuesday and they beat Notts County.

"They started the season very well; they were top of the league after four games and they’ve got some good players. Like every game it will be competitive, the lads have recovered well from Tuesday (a 1-1 draw at MK Dons) and it’s another great chance for us which we are very excited about."
