San Francisco 49ers told Purdy is "clearly better" than Lance in trade warning
The San Francisco 49ers have been told they face a huge issue over the future of quarterback Trey Lance, as Brock Purdy is "clearly better" than the first-round draft pick. Purdy was brought into the starting spot after Lance suffered a season-ending injury, and has made the role his own.
Purdy made an instant impression after taking the starting spot in San Francisco, having carried the team into the Play-Offs. The quarterback was selected with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, earning the nickname 'Mr Irrelevant' as a result.
The young quarterback wasn't supposed to be the team's starter this season, especially considering the fact Lance was taken third overall in last year's draft. However, it now appears the 49ers will have to choose between Lance and Purdy next season.
Speaking on his podcast, NFL expert Bill Simmons explained that the 49ers may have to trade Lance due to Purdy being the better player. Purdy led the 49ers to victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL Wild Card Round on Saturday night.
The youngster threw for 332 yards, three touchdowns and didn't get intercepted once in the win - which was his first-ever Play-Off game.
Joe Burrow backs Patrick Mahomes after Kansas City Chiefs reach Super BowlSpeaking on Monday, Simmons explained: "What do they do with Trey Lance? They traded all these picks to get Trey Lance, they end up getting a quarterback in the last pick of the draft, who is clearly better than Trey Lance.
"So now what do you do? Is Trey Lance available? Would you trade for Trey Lance? He's coming for an injury... They have two quarterbacks who could probably start for other teams. But unless Purdy completely self-destructs, he's going to be that guy.
"12 teams need a quarterback. They'll probably keep him. Purdy was 18-30, 332 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. This continues to be the most incredible story.
"There's not a lot of angles other than to say this is incredible, but it also makes you think how stupid drafting is."
