The Kansas City Chiefs have been given a boost by an unexpected change to the NFL salary cap. The NFL announced on Friday that the salary cap for the 2024 season will be $255.4 million, up by $30.6 million from 2023.

This is the biggest increase in NFL history and it could help the Chiefs keep their team together. The Chiefs are hoping to make history by winning the Super Bowl three times in a row.

They retained their title by beating the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11. Key players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Isaiah Pacheco are already signed up for the offensive side of the team. But defensive stars Chris Jones and L'Jarius Sneed are heading towards free agency - and now they've got more leeway to tie them down to new deals.

Before the salary cap increase was announced, the Chiefs had $23 million available. Now, they have $53.4 million, which should help them keep their main stars and give them a real chance of making history.

After their victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, and a thrilling overtime win against the Niners on Feb. 11, the Chiefs are aiming to be the first team in the Super Bowl era to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times in a row. Despite doubts about them as they entered the postseason, they once again showed why they're top of the league.

Even though the Chiefs were the best in the AFC West last season, they weren't quite up to scratch for the No. 1 seed, finishing with an 11-6 record. Their offense had some shaky moments this season, with rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice carrying a lot of their hopes.

But the Chiefs managed to get through one of the hardest postseason runs ever, defeating the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and finally the Niners. Their offensive quality might not have been as good as some of their rivals, but their depth was shown when Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mecole Hardman scored touchdowns in the Super Bowl, becoming unexpected heroes.

The Chiefs will be the team everyone wants to beat next season, but other teams know about their potential defensive problems. Jones and Sneed are two of the best around, and rival teams are ready to not only boost their defense but also try to take away the Chiefs' top players.

Brett Veach, the general manager, has lots to think about for the team's future. Even with more money to spend, it's not certain if players like Jones or Sneed will stay. But they can talk better deals now, which is what Jones did last year.

Jones didn't play in the first game against the Detroit Lions because he wanted a better contract. The team lost 21-20 without him. Then he agreed to stay for one more year and could now sign a more long-term extension.

At the Chiefs' Super Bowl parade, Jones yelled from the bus: "For those who want Chris Jones gone, I ain't going nowhere, baby! I will be here next year, the year after, and the year after."
