England midfielder Georgia Stanway laughed off questions about the Bayern Munich struggles Harry Kane is currently wading through - because she has another Frauen-Bundesliga title in sight.

It’s been a miserable season for Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern, having already lost the German Super Cup, been dumped out of the German Cup by third-tier side Saarbrücken and now trailing an unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen by eight points in the Bundesliga. Bayern also lost the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 to Lazio, with a particularly disappointing display in the Stadio Olimpico.

The dismal results have resulted in Tuchel's departure being confirmed, the ex-Chelsea boss to exit at the end of the season. Meanwhile for England captain Kane, the depleting likelihood of silverware is a cruel twist of fate for a player who swapped Tottenham's empty trophy cabinets for the bulging ones of Bayern.

What exactly is at the heart of Bayern’s slump has been heavily mooted, but Stanway, who joined the club from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and won the league title in her first season, was diplomatic as she noted every football club is subject to a dip in form no matter how formidable the dynasty once looked.

“Bayern have been successful for the last 25 years,” the Lioness said ahead of England’s friendly clash with Austria. “There’s always going to be a hiccup and something that is going to happen.

"You can see that Harry Kane has gone and he’s been unbelievable. It’s fine details, but that’s also football. It’s going to happen.”

Asked whether she shares in the pressure faced by the men’s team, Stanway pointed out: "At the moment we’re top of the league and that’s what we’re going to continue with, [my] focus is on Bayern Women at the moment.”

It would be the 25-year-old's second title in two years if the team are successful.

There won't be any European glory however; a disappointing finish in an unenviable Champions League group stage saw Bayern pipped to the knockout rounds by Ajax after Stanway's unfortunate own goal meant a 2-2 draw with Paris-Saint Germain. The result meant no German side would reach the UWCL's quarter-finals for the first time in history.

Nevertheless, Stanway and co are still in the running for the German Cup with a quarter-final scheduled for early next month, and the air around the women’s team is in stark contrast to that of the men’s.

“Fortunately, we’re at a different campus so we don’t necessarily get the pressure above us,” Stanway said. “We don’t feel the stress, we’re at a different campus and we’re in a completely different situation."

England face Austria on Friday evening as part of their warm-weather training camp in preparation for the Euro2025 qualifiers. Sarina Wiegman ’s England are bidding to put a disappointing 2023 behind them after failing to qualify for the summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.
