Jordan North left completely 'blindsided' by his Radio 1 exit

If the news that Jordan North was leaving Radio 1 came as a shock to listeners, it came as an even bigger one to him.

The presenter was “blindsided” by news of his departure, which was issued without his knowledge in chaotic scenes on Friday. Jordan was announced yesterday as the new host of Capital radio’s breakfast show, taking over from Roman Kemp. By the time his departure was announced he had already presented his last episode of the BBC drive time show, alongside co-host Vick Hope, albeit unaware.

A source said there were tensions running high for a few months surrounding Jordan’s departure after he let producers know he wanted to go. The source said: “Conversations were going back and forth between Jordan’s people and the top people at the BBC for months, and over time they deteriorated. Once he formally requested to leave, that was it – he was off air, immediately. It’s a shame it ended on such a bad note after 10 years," they added.

At breakneck speed, Roman then announced his departure first thing on Monday morning and then Jordan was named his replacement. On Wednesday morning, host Roman introduced Jordan to the Capital Breakfast audience, and said: “You are going to absolutely love this Jordan. I have so much faith in you mate. It’s hard leaving, it feels like your child, but you want it to go into good hands and I know with you it’s going to be just that. Everyone, send as much love as possible to Jordan.”

Jordan, who will also host Capital’s Summertime Ball in June 2024, said: “I am beyond excited to be joining Global and to wake up the nation every morning on Capital - I can't wait to start working with the amazing team here and get stuck in, to create the most fun and entertaining breakfast show. Getting to host Capital Breakfast has always been a dream of mine and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I simply couldn’t turn down.”

After Jordan's abrupt departure from Radio 1 was announced, his former co-host Vick Hope took to Instagram to express her sadness at not being able to say a "proper goodbye". She said she was "absolutely gutted" as she penned a sweet supportive message on social media.

A few days before it was confirmed Jordan would be taking over, an emotional Roman revealed quitting his popular show wasn't a decision "that just happened overnight and it's not one that I've found easy at all." Speaking to listeners on Monday, he said he hasn't been finding it "easy at all."

Jamie Laing has replaced Jordan on Radio 1 and the source added: “After all the hassle BBC bosses will just be glad to get Jamie in and get on with the show. They should make a radio show about what goes on behind the scenes, it’d make for great listening." However, the replacement didn't go down well with fans, with many fuming at the decision to choose an 'already rich celebrity'.
