Sir Jim Ratcliffe has unveiled his ultimate Manchester United aim after becoming the club's co-owner - to get the Red Devils playing really good football.

The INEOS founder has seen his £1.3billion deal to take over 27.7 per cent of the club approved and has lofty ambitions to return United to the very top. Having already made clear his ambition to overtake Manchester City and Liverpool, Ratcliffe wants to do it in style.

The United fan described the past 11 years as a 'complete misery'. United have not won a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson departed from the club in 2013.

"The ultimate aim is just for Manchester United to play really good football," said Ratcliffe speaking at INEOS headquarters in London. "The only thing we’re spending time and energy on is, how do we get Manchester United back to where it should be."

He added: "It’s been a complete misery really in the last 11 years - and it’s just frustrating if you’re a supporter. It's sort of related in a way because 11 years is a long period of time, isn't it? Fundamentally you want to see your club being where it should be.

"It's one of the biggest clubs in the world and should be playing the best football in the world. So it’s certainly related to the decision (to invest)."

The 71-year-old has already looked to instigate change in the north west. Omar Berrada is set to join from rivals City as the club's new CEO, while Ratcliffe also hopes to land Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth.

The INEOS chief wants to ensure the staff at the club are the best in the world. Ratcliffe knows it will be a challenge to return his side to challenging at the top.

He said: "The club is enormous. The tentacles reach around the world, don't they? Everywhere I go in the world it's Manchester United. It affects an awful lot of people on the planet - and getting it right is not easy.

"We've got to get so many aspects of that club right. And the right people, doing the right thing at the right time - and doing it well.‌ We need to populate all the key roles with people who are best in class - 10 out of 10s. It's going to be intense at times."

Ratcliffe has already noticed a change on the pitch since the Christmas period. United have won six of their seven matches since the turn of the year after a difficult start to Ten Hag's second season.

The Dutchman's new boss wants excitement on the pitch that can inspire in the same manner as Eric Cantona. He explained: "He (Cantona) was a maverick. He was the catalyst for change in (Sir Alex) Ferguson’s era. The sort of talisman.

‌‌"There has always been a bit of glamour attached to Manchester United, which has been lacking a bit in the last few years.‌ That is quite important. At the end of the day, we are in the entertainment business. So that’s why you don’t want to watch bland football or characterless football.

"I can't remember many matches at the beginning of the season I was really excited by. But since Christmas we have played some really good football - and I have really enjoyed it."
