A cathedral city in the north of England is the most dog-friendly destination in the country.

Carlisle has taken the crown as the place that will most readily welcome in a pooch and show them a good time, according to hiking equipment supplier Millets. It ticks all of the boxes when it comes to places to take a pooch, from lovely walks and seaside spots to dog friendly pubs and hotels.

Carlisle has a range of hotels where dogs are welcomed in with a friendly pat. The Halston is a top-rated hotel that offers dog-friendly apartments where you can look forward to your pampered pooches being greeted with dog bowls, comfy beds, and many treats.

The charming Carlisle Station Hotel is another which allows dogs, this one two per room. After a day of adventure, you and your canine companions can return to a tasty meal in the attached Grill restaurant before enjoying a restful night's sleep. On the cheaper but still cheerful end of the spectrum, Travelodge has dog-friendly rooms in the city from £48.

When in the city you can treat yourself to a Michelin-starred dinner with your mutt at your side in Carlisle thanks to the Pentonbridge Inn, which one reviewer recently described as a "jewel of a place". "Very happy with this dog-friendly excellent discovery," they said, adding the food was "amazing" and that the service was "attentive and friendly".

Another well regarded spot is The Queen Inn Great Corby, which scores 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor and is also a friend of fur-covered pets. "We were welcomed by a wonderful professional guy behind the bar whose customer service was to be admired. Along with our small rescue collie he made us feel welcome," another reviewer wrote.

Carlisle also offers some spectacular countryside and park walks, including a mixture of lowland paths, easy hikes for old or little dogs, and more strenuous walks for young pups.

One particularly nice spot is Rickerby Park, which is a traditional, Victorian parkland located on the banks of the River Eden. "The parkland has miles of riverside trails and open grassland for your dog to explore; they can even enjoy a fun swim in the River Eden. The park is sometimes grazed by sheep or cattle so be aware and keep your dog on a lead if you approach grazing animals," writes One Lake District.

Kingmoor North and Kingmoor South Nature Reserves is also worth having on your radar - the remains of a much larger woodland which extended north from the Kingmoor Road in Carlisle to the M6 and was once home to a horse racing course. Nowadays the area is a peaceful woodland ideal for exercising dogs, filled full of sticks perfect for throwing and with plenty of pleasant footbridges to wander over.

To the west of the city is the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an estuary area with muddy sand banks and pleasantly bleak stretches of open river that is ideal splashing around territory for both human and dog.

If you have already been to Carlisle with your four-legged pal or simply fancy trying somewhere else, then Millets has plenty of other suggestions when it comes to dog friendly places.
