Adam Thomas left in 'agony' after 'flare up' as he shares health update

Adam Thomas is currently being cared for by his family after a health condition has left him in "agony".

The actor, who is best known for portraying Donte Charles on the BBC One school drama Waterloo Road, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which can flare up at any moment. But one incident on the set of the programme has left him in agony and needing attention from his loved ones.

Taking to Instagram, the actor who appeared on Strictly Come Dancing revealed his son Teddy, nine, was waiting on him as he was laid down resting following a flare-up following a hurtful injury. In view of his 1 million followers on the photo-sharing app, Teddy could be seen placing what looks to be an ice pack on Adam's ankle.

Captioning his post, Adam, 35, penned: "Today I had such a bad flare-up with my arthritis. I was in so much pain, still am... but just to add to the pain I kicked a chair in a scene today at work and I can't tell you how much it hurt. Tried to play it cool, but wow." He added: "Good little Ted for looking after me. Also, just want to say thanks everyone who has been sending so much love and advice over my arthritis journey.

"I just want to thank you all for sharing your story. It means the world." Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term condition that causes swelling and stiffness in the joints, most commonly in the hands, feet and wrists. The autoimmune condition sees the immune system attack the cells around the joints by mistake, causing stiffness, swelling and pain.

Over time, the condition can damage the joints as well as nearby bones and carriage. The condition can be treated with medicine to relieve symptoms which also slows the progression of the disease, as well as physiotherapy to aid the flare-ups. Previously, Adam has tried various medications including painkillers as well as steroid injections to help his pain and inflammation.

Opening up about the condition and his treatment, he previously told fans: "I will be trying a disease-modifying drug which I will then take (if it works) for the rest of my life or until I go into remission. It's been a long and hard battle and as of yet nothing has worked, but I'm hopeful! I've suffered just over a year with arthritis and I have to say it’s been the toughest period of my life to date.

"I'm a firm believer of everything happening for a reason, but I don't really have the answer to that just yet. If I'm being completely honest… I'm suffering… I don't think I want to suffer in silence no more."
