Bayern Munich and head coach Thomas Tuchel have confirmed that that they will part ways at the end of the season.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea chief only joined the German giants last March and made a dream start to life in the Bundesliga by guiding Bayern to the title. He has endured a challenging second season, though, and pressure has grown on him in recent weeks.

Bayern are currently eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen at the Bundesliga summit after being thrashed 3-0 by their title rivals earlier this month. And their Champions League hopes are also hanging by a thread after they were beaten 1-0 by Lazio in their Round of 16 first leg tie last week.

It was claimed by Sky Germany on Wednesday morning that Tuchel and Bayern have agreed that he will leave the club at the end of the current campaign. That was then promptly confirmed in a club statement, with Tuchel explaining: “We have agreed that we will end our collaboration after this season. Until then, I and my coaching team will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success.”

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also commented on the decision, adding: “In an open, good conversation we came to the decision to mutually end our collaboration in the summer. Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024/25 season.

“Until then, every individual in the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. I also explicitly hold the team responsible. Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced that after the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio Rome, we will advance to the quarter-finals in the second leg in our fully occupied Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.”

With Tuchel set to remain in his post until the end of the campaign, Bayern have plenty of time to plot out their next move. Although there has been plenty of speculation over Tuchel's future, it remains to be seen who they could replace him with.

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was recently credited with an interest in the role and was even said to be learning German to prepare, according to Bild.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been mentioned as a potential successor, however, the Norwegian was only touted as an interim option rather than a long-term one.

Xabi Alonso, the head coach of Bayern's title rivals, is also likely to be in the frame for the vacancy, although he has quickly emerged as the leading contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in the summer.
