Bayer Leverkusen chief Simon Rolfes claims he is “sure” Xabi Alonso will stay with the club despite interest from both Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

The Spaniard has been linked with moves to both Anfield and the Allianz Arena. Liverpool are on the hunt for a new manager after Jurgen Klopp’s bombshell exit announcement.

Bayern are also reportedly considering a swoop amid the rising pressure on Thomas Tuchel. Now, Leverkusen Director of Sport Rolfes has spoken out on Alonso’s future at the BayArena.

He is confident that he will still be the club’s manager next season. Asked by German outlet Sport1 if Alonso will stay, he replied: "Yes I'm sure.

“One is contract constellations. The other thing is how comfortable he feels, the family, himself and that he knows what he has in the club. He also has a very good team, we will have a very good perspective next year and there is no change in the team.”

Alonso is under contract with the current Bundesliga leaders until the summer of 2026. They could potentially be celebrating a trio of trophies come the end of the season - Leverkusen are still in both the German Cup and the Europa League.

Rolfes has claimed that the progress made at the club should encourage Alonso and their star players to stay. He added: “We will definitely have a top team available next year. These are all points that, in addition to contracts, coaches like Xabi but also players who arouse interest from other clubs often keep us with us.”

Speaking further on Alonso’s influence at the club, Rolfes said: “He surprises me every now and then. What we and he always say internally: Everyone has their role and we have a good squad.

“Everyone has the quality to play a good role. Xabi has the courage to not only commit to an eleven, but also to say: I'll adapt the system and bring other guys onto the pitch. We are not trapped in the system that is based on how we play football.”

Neither Bayern Munich nor Liverpool have made official moves to appoint Alonso as their new manager yet. The German giants are reportedly considering the future of current boss Tuchel after three losses in a row.

They will wait until the summer to move for him, with former manager Hansi Flick reportedly an option to take over on an interim basis. Away from Alonso, Liverpool have also been linked with a host of options including Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Frank and Ruben Amorim.

Elsewhere, Rolfes has also been linked with his own move to Liverpool as they aim to appoint a new director of football, but he has reiterated his loyalty to Leverkusen. Speaking to Kicker, he said: “The fact that there is a lot of speculation about the protagonists of Bayer 04 due to our current successes is part of the business.

“But that doesn’t change my orientation. I didn’t extend my contract until the autumn without reason. I am absolutely happy in this constellation in Leverkusen.”
