We've all got restaurant chains we're not a fan of, but maybe not enough to write a review this scathing.

Last week, famed food critic Giles Coren wrote a review of a popular restaurant chain, and his words have now gone viral after he branded the chain the "worst in the world" and said the food was "utterly hideous". And which chain was he reviewing? German Doner Kebab, a Scotland-based fast food chain with more than 100 restaurants around the world.

German Doner Kebab is owned by Scots businessman Athif Sarwar and has headquarters based in Glasgow, but when Coren visited a London branch of the chain, he was less than impressed.

In his review, written for The Times, Coren described the chicken kebab he ordered as "utterly hideous" and said it tasted like "factory vegetable oils" and "burnt roadkill". He also criticised his meal for having a "slimy" consistency. Elsewhere in his scathing write-up, Coren also called out the restaurant for having a touchscreen ordering system as he felt it was impersonal, and claimed the table he sat down at was "greasy" - leaving him feeling "disgusted".

The food critic continued to have a bad experience when he left to wash his hands in the restaurant's bathroom, too. He claimed he was unable to use the downstairs toilet because it was out of order, so he was forced to climb "over piled sacks of onions and crates of tomatoes, slabs of Coke and Pepsi and a steepling 5ft tower of 10-litre tubs of Heinz Mayonnaise" to reach the disabled toilet, which he wrote had a broken door.

What's more, Coren went on to slam the other diners at the restaurant, claiming that they were the same type of people who would order a kebab after a night out. He wrote: "Bar the lady at the drinks counter, it was only blokes in there. About 20 of them. All singles, aged 25-40 in black and grey hoodies, hunkered over their noon kebab.

"Exactly the same blokes who form the queues outside these places at night, after the pub, squaring for a drunken punch-up, except having much less fun. I did not see a woman come in or leave in the 45 minutes I was there."

Scoring his experience at German Doner Kebab, Coren gave the service he received a zero out of 10, the cooking a one out of 10, and the "vibes" a minus nine. The average score was therefore -2.97 out of 10, which he described as "overgenerous".
