Liverpool dealt double injury blow ahead of Carabao Cup final vs Chelsea

Liverpool have been dealt yet another injury blow with Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota set to miss the Reds’ Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday.

The pair picked up injuries during the weekend win over Brentford and are not expected to be fit for the Wembley clash. Jones, 23, was forced off with a blow to the lower part of his shin in the 4-1 victory.

While Jota, 27, suffered a knee injury that is still being assessed. Reports in Portugal have suggested he could be out for up to two months but he’s still undergoing tests. Darwin Nunez went off as a precaution at the weekend but there’s been no update yet if he’s picked up a serious problem.

Alisson could also miss the Carabao Cup final with a hamstring injury he picked up last week before the win over the Bees. But the Brazilian keeper would not have featured against Chelsea anyways as Kop boss Jurgen Klopp has used Irish shot stopper Caoimhin Kelleher in the League Cup this season.

Liverpool face Luton on Wednesday night as the Reds look to keep setting the pace in the Premier League title race. Jota’s absence will be a significant blow to their attack with the Portuguese forward having netted 14 goals this season, including five in his last seven as he stepped up in the absence of Mo Salah.

The Reds are also without Trent Alexander-Arnold for their clash with Luton and the League Cup decider due to a knee injury. Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is a doubt as he battles a hamstring problem and Thiago Alcantara is also missing.

Liverpool have an FA Cup fifth-round tie with Southampton next week before a tricky away trip to Nottingham Forest on March 2 and a mammoth title showdown with Manchester City a week later. Cody Gakpo, who scored the fourth at the weekend, remains in an upbeat mood after back-to-back league wins have kept them two points clear at the top of the table.

He said: “I think we have to keep the feeling what we have at the moment and just build on that. Obviously in midweek we have another really important game and then the weekend is also another really important one. I think only important games will come up now.”
