Game of Thrones star Sean Bean stars in the new trailer for Disney+’s upcoming murder mystery series, Shardlake. Launching later this year, the four-part drama is billed as an “eerie whodunnit adventure” set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries.

It is based on the first novel in C.J. Sansom’s best-selling Tudor series and follows lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) as he is tasked with investigating a murder in a remote monastery. According to the official synopsis, Shardlake is “one of the few honest men in a world beset with scheming and plots.”

Shardlake works for Thomas Cromwell (Bean), the dangerous and all-powerful right-hand man to Henry VIII. Despite his unwavering loyalty to Cromwell and the Crown, Shardlake suffers abuse as a “crookback of no importance” wherever he turns as a person living with scoliosis.

The upcoming Disney+ series sees Shardlake’s sheltered life turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a remote monastery. The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery.

He leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option and insists he is accompanied by the cocky Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle). The duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order.

Help and Then Barbara Met Alan star Arthur Hughes leads the series as Shardlake, alongside Masters of the Air’s Anthony Boyle as Jack, who leaves Shardlake unsure of whether he is an assistant or Cromwell’s spy. Also starring are Babou Ceesay, Paul Kaye, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis and Peter Firth.

Disney+’s first trailer for Shardlake promises a tense series drenched in mystery, suspense and deception.

“Why in this house of God, do I smell secrets and fear?” Shardlake says in the new footage.
