Conor McGregor had a mixed night of predictions as Ilia Topuria knocked out Alex Volkanovski at UFC 298.

Topuria remained unbeaten and won the same world title that McGregor once held by stopping Volkanovski in the second round of their world title fight. McGregor didn't get his prediction right for the fight as he backed Volkanovski to survive an early onslaught from Topuria to defend his belt.

"Awesome night of UFC fights tonight! Garry is going to run through Geoff in the first round. Volk will get hurt early but come back and KO Ilia. Over in 2 rounds. Costa and Whittaker will have a good 3 round exchange as will Merab and Henry. Have a good evening everyone and remember, Proper Whiskey, Forged Irish Stout, and McGregor rule the roost, baby," McGregor tweeted before the event.

McGregor didn't predict a winner for Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa's fight in the co-main event but did say the fight, which Whittaker won on points, would go three rounds. McGregor made the same prediction for Merab Dvalishvili and Henry Cejudo's fight, which also went the distance as Dvalishvili got the nod.

The UFC legend backed his countryman Ian Garry to knockout Geoff Neal but the 26-year-old was unable to get the finish as he won on points. Boos echoed around the Honda Center in California during Garry's fight and he fired back at his critics by saying: "Let them talk, I'm winning and living the life. Keep talking, you're all here watching me."

McGregor was called out for a fight by Topuria later this year as the new champion said: “It’s showtime, it’s time to bring the UFC to Spain. Conor McGregor if you still have some balls, I will be waiting for you in Spain." McGregor is set to make his fighting return later this year but the bout won't take place at UFC 300 as the main event between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill.

There were many similarities between Topuria and McGregor going into their undisputed featherweight world title fights as both were 6-0 in the UFC, on a 14-fight winning streak and 27-years-old. Topuria even channelled his inner McGregor by stealing Volkanovski's world title belt at their press conference earlier in the week.
