David de Gea is looking to see out his career in Spain as he waits on his next move.

The goalkeeper has been without a club since Manchester United opted not to renew his contract back in the summer. Ever since then the Spaniard has been a free agent despite links to the likes of Newcastle United and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Now The Sun has reported that De Gea is prepared to bide his time and wait for an offer in his homeland. That could yet see him return to Atletico Madrid, the club he left to sign for United back in 2011. Their rivals Real Madrid could also be an option as they seek more cover in goal.

De Gea nearly joined Los Blancos a decade ago before a technical issue saw the deal fail to meet the deadline and he remained in Manchester, where he spent 12 years before Erik ten Hag opted for a change. Andre Onana has since come in as the club's No 1.

De Gea picked up more Player of the Year awards than any individual in the club's history by the time he departed with the goalkeeper viewed by many as one of the world's best for period, particularly when Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho were in charge.

Towards the latter end of his Old Trafford spell though De Gea's performances became increasingly error-strewn and there were questions asked, particularly as the United hierarchy signed him to a lucrative deal back in 2019.

Upon leaving the club De Gea said: "I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We've achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt.

"To lead the team, to represent this institution - the biggest club in the world - was an honour only bestowed upon a few lucky footballers. Now it's the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings."

There was previously talk of United offering De Gea a route back to English football just months after agreeing to let him leave, although that never materialised. Despite signing for big money Onana is yet to fully convince as the club's new first choice goalkeeper.
