If you aren't happy with how your hair is looking it may be because you have been making the "biggest mistake" when it comes to conditioning.

Washing your hair can be a time-consuming task but it is essential for healthy hair. However, you wouldn't want to spend time taking a long shower to shampoo and condition your locks, plus blow dry afterward, for it to be all wrong. Celebrity hairstylist and star of Netflix's Queer Eye, Jonathon Van Ness, says people are making huge errors when it comes to to their hair washing routine.

The 36-year-old podcast host took to TikTok recently to show how he takes care of his famous long hair. "Let's go into depth into hair washing," he said. But viewers were left shocked when Jonathon said people need to use a tool to spread conditioner through their hair.

Jonathon explained that firstly you do not need to keep the shower running while applying your conditioner. Next, he covers his palm in condition before applying it to the ends of his hair before rubbing the excess into the crown of his head, his scalp, and his hair roots.

He added: "Now, this is the biggest mistake people make when they are conditioning their hair - they're not using a brush to detangle in the shower. If you just use your fingers to do this, you're not really distributing your conditioner all over everything in the way that you need to."

Jonathon continued: "So, make sure you are using a wet brush or a wide-tooth comb in the shower to really work the conditioner from your roots to your ends. Otherwise, your hair isn't getting the full benefits of the conditioner."

But people who viewed the video appeared confused by the advice - having previously heard that brushing your hair in the shower is bad for it. One individual said: "I was always told not to brush my hair when it's wet!"

Another agreed: "I was told not to brush my hair when it's wet because it breaks easier." "I was always told to not brush when wet as your hair weakens and can cause breakage," said another.

Jonathon replied to the comments and explained as long as you brush your hair gently when wet it should not break. Another said the trick "saved" her hair. "This is actually so helpful," another commented.

Jonathon also gave his advice on how to shampoo your hair. The Netflix star said the first step is to get a good shampoo that is right for your hair needs.

He explained: "Your style starts in the shower so if you're going for something smooth, use a hydrating shampoo. If you want volume, use something volumising. Your goals start in the shower."

He then explained that when shampooing, people need to apply the cleaner to each section of their scalp - the top, the sides and the back. The TV star said you should add a little bit of shower water to your shampoo to help it spread across your head easily.

He added: "I use the pads of my fingers to make circular motions and to remove any dirt and debris. I'm not scrubbing my hair with shampoo. The shampoo is more for your scalp - your ends don't really need to get washed like that because the soap is going to wash over them anyway."
