Crystal Palace offer health update on Roy Hodgson after being sent to hospital
Crystal Palace have confirmed Roy Hodgson is in a stable condition and undergoing tests in hospital after being taken ill during training.
A statement from the club reads: "Following news that Roy Hodgson was taken ill during today’s training session, we can confirm that he is now stable and is currently undergoing tests in hospital. Everybody at the club sends their best wishes to Roy for a speedy recovery."
Hodgson, 76, was due to speak to the media on Thursday, before the club announced that would be postponed after a training ground incident. Reports have suggested that he was receiving medical attention, leaving players and staff 'visibly concerned'.
The Times subsequently reported Hodgson collapsed during the session, with his assistant Ray Lewington and goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely insisting he was OK.
Concerns over Hodgson's health arrived hours after reports that Palace bosses have lined up Oliver Glasner to replace him in the Selhurst Park dugout. Glasner won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022 and is understood to have an agreement in principle regarding taking the job.
Baby boy has spent his life in hospital as doctors are 'scared' to discharge himPalace go into this weekend's fixtures just five points clear of the relegation zone, with pressure piling on Hodgson. Fans have conducted several protests in recent weeks, aimed at both the manager and the board.
Hodgson was appointed last term and given a brief of keeping the South Londoners in the Premier League following a dismal end to the reign on Patrick Vieira. The former England boss completed that objective comfortably with chairman Steve Parish convinced to keep him on board for another season.
However, it has been tough going for the veteran boss, who has cut an increasingly frustrated figure during Palace's current slump. Speaking after Monday night's defeat to Chelsea, he refused to even discuss the positives from what was an improved performance.
He said: “I’m not really in the mood if I’m being brutally honest of (highlighting) positives and trying to find things to say that would cheer me up, because I don’t know what could be said that would cheer me up.
“What can I say that will cheer the players up? I could possibly say, well, with the players we’ve got coming back and these guys doing so well, it bodes well for the future with the 14 games we have left."
Hodgson went on to suggest that he still believed he would be able to steer Palace to safety again, adding: “It’s a bad period but it’s been caused by the injury situation,” he said. “It’s 14 games [left], a lot of matches and a lot of points and I think we’ve shown enough.
“So I don’t have any concerns, but there is no complacency and points are very necessary to get away from the relegation zone. This group of players are good enough and tonight gave me even more faith and belief.”
