A couple from the Isle of Wight, fed up with commuting to the mainland for work, decided to make a big change on BBC's popular property show, Escape to the Country.

They had a budget of £650,000 and a wish-list that included a large plot of land, a bike store, a workshop for their proposed mountain bike business, and a house with at least three bedrooms. They also wanted a house that mixed traditional and contemporary styles, and had a grand staircase.

A converted school located on a main road, perfect for their business plans, caught their eye. Despite its unusual location, it won them over due to its potential for attracting customers. The five-bedroom property, near Glenshee, Perth, and Kinross, has 0.75 acres of land and is in the Cairngorms National Park.

Priced just over £650,000, both the couple and presenter Jules were impressed, especially as Maryan fell in love with the modern, slatted staircase. The BBC's popular property show helped a couple find their dream home on the English south coast. With a budget of £650,000, they had a wish-list that included a large plot of land, a bike store, a workshop for their proposed mountain bike business, and a house with at least three bedrooms.

They also wanted a house that combined traditional and contemporary styles, and a magnificent staircase. A converted school located on a main road side, ideal for the couple's business aspirations, caught their eye. Despite its unexpected location, it won them over due to its prime spot that offered potential customer exposure.

The five-bedroom property is based near Glenshee, Perth, and Kinross, and sits inside the Cairngorms National Park. It boasts a 0.75acre land space and an asking price of just over £650,000. Both the couple and presenter Jules were impressed, especially as Maryan found herself falling in love with the modern, slatted staircase.

Maryan claimed one room as her football-free zone. However, Michael wasn't left out as there was another spacious reception room with an impressive fireplace. This room also boasted a pair of drinks cabinets, creating a 'his and hers' bar setup. The entrance hall had a cosy log burner and fireplace right by an amazing staircase. Upstairs, there were five lovely bedrooms, including a main one with its own bathroom. The family bathroom was super fancy, making Michael say 'wow' because it had two sinks.

The kitchen was new and had a huge island that made Michael laugh and say it was like a continent. Maryan got teary again, not just because the house was so big and nice, but because someone had taken care to make it look great. Then they looked at another house in the middle of Grantown-on-Spey in the Highlands. It was a surprise because the show usually looks for houses in the countryside, but this town is popular with tourists, so Jules Hudson thought it would be perfect for starting a holiday business or something outdoorsy.

When they went into the Arts and Crafts house with the Highlands all around, Maryan couldn't believe her eyes and got really emotional, especially when she saw the grand staircase. She had to wipe away tears and said: "Oh my goodness, I feel quite emotional, that's something else."

The couple was mesmerised by the five-bedroom Edwardian detached home full of lovingly preserved historic features and a pristine white backdrop ready for their unique imprint. As well as an incredible drawing room with a beautiful fireplace, there was even a glass drinks cabinet built into the exquisitely carved wood.

Maryan openly expressed her enchantment with the dwelling, stating: "When I walked through the front door I was taken aback by the splendour, the greatness of the hallway. This property immediately gave me that feeling of just being home, of being hugged, and just being really welcoming."

On the flip side, Jules acknowledged the potential downside ahead - the posh property's locale within town boundaries and its small plot size of merely half an acre - saying: "Really, showing them this property, in a town, on Escape to the Country, might be a gamble but it might pay off."

Maintaining such a grand house made Michael apprehensive, finding it "daunting". But its stunning staircase had already brought Maryan to tears. So would they take the plunge? Ultimately, the eye-watering price tag exceeding £560,000 initially left the pair stunned. However, after some number crunching, Michael burst out in excitement, "We can have a yacht as well as have the business, have the house - we're done!"

Jules then showed them a surprise house just outside the village of Muir of Fowlis, Aberdeenshire. Despite lacking the character and historic charm of the second property, it had 10 acres of land, a massive hanger, and a workshop perfect for business. The house was nestled in miles of beautiful scenery, great for mountain biking.

After learning the price was over £590,000, the couple agreed to come back for another look. This story was featured on Escape to the Country series 24, episode 31, which you can watch on BBC iPlayer.
