Fuming William's order to Harry ahead of Meghan wedding despite Queen's decision
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex, stepped out beaming from St George's Chapel in Windsor as millions watched on in 2018.
"You look amazing,” Harry whispered to his blushing bride after catching sight of her. "Thank you,” she replied. To the viewers, it looked like the perfect fairytale wedding - the royal who fell in love with an American actress.
But behind the scenes, it was a tumultuous affair - as Ingrid Seward's new book My Mother & I, about the King, discusses. Ahead of the big day, Prince Harry visited the Queen to ask permission to keep his beard for the wedding - as tradition dictates no facial hair while wearing military dress uniform.
The book claims Prince William was furious - annoyed that his youngest brother had gone to the Queen, annoyed she'd approved it and annoyed at Harry's so-called 'one-upmanship.'
William had not been allowed to keep his beard - or wear his choice of uniform at the wedding. After all, he was the heir, and had to do everything by the book. During a row over this matter, Harry claims that the argument became so heated that William ordered him to shave 'as the Heir speaking to the Spare'.
Strictly's Molly Rainford and Tyler West fuel romance rumours while on tourIn an interview with Prince Harry in early 2023 to promote his memoir, ITV presenter Tom Bradby suggested the drama about his beard was perhaps linked to something deeper.
"I remembered that William had a beard himself and that granny and other people, the ones to tell – told him that he had to shave it off," Harry explained to Tom during their chat.
"Um, the difference for me, if there was a difference, but the difference for me was, as I explained to my grandmother, that this beard I'm still – that I'm still wearing, felt to me at the time like the new Harry. Right?"
He went on how his brother possibly "found it hard" that other people had told him to shave his own facial hair off, while Harry was able to wear his military uniform - with an all-important beard - on his and Meghan's wedding day in 2018.

"I would feel very, very different without my beard, and that’s hard for people to understand who’ve never grown a beard, um, but hopefully those beard people out there will go 'Yeah, no, I fully get that, I can understand'," Harry adds when discussing how important his facial hair was to him.
That's not the only intense argument William and Harry found themselves in. Writing in his debut memoir Spare, Harry claimed his brother grabbed him by the collar and knocked him to the floor in a brawl following a heated row over Meghan.
He claimed: "He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out."
