Sir Elton John is working on a new album - seven months after hanging up his microphone to retire from touring.

The 76-year-old music legend has been churning out hits since 1968 and last year his mammoth Farewell Yellow Brick Road world tour came to an end in July after 330 performances. On the music front, his last album, titled Regimental Sgt. Zippo, was released in June 2021 - unleashing original tracks that he first recorded in 1967 for the first time.

In October 2021, he also released a duets album titled The Lockdown Sessions featuring mash up tracks of old tunes remixed and featuring guest vocalists - including Dua Lipa on the track Cold Heart and Britney Spears on the track Hold Me Closer. Now fans will soon be able to get their hands on a brand new album from the hitmaker.

While Sir Elton was happy to bow out of the spotlight in terms of performing on stage, it seems he is more than happy to hit the studio to record more music. And now a report has claimed he has been beavering away inside a music studio to create a record - which is expected to be released towards the end of the year.

A source told The Sun: “It’s all been very top secret but Elton is back in the studio working on a new album. Time frames are always movable but the fourth quarter has been pencilled in terms of a release date. He adores music and that will never change but the desire to be as busy as he was has waned. Elton will still have a Rocket Hour radio show on Apple Music and finger is very much still on the pulse; he just wants to slow down a bit and spend the time with his family but the new album is coming.”

Sir Elton announced he was retiring from touring way back in January 2018 and he went on the road later that year. The Covid-19 pandemic played havoc with his tour dates, but he finally reached his last show in Stockholm, Sweden, on 8 July 2023. Addressing the end of his live tour career, the star said on stage: “I’ve had the most wonderful career, beyond belief. Fifty-two years of pure joy playing music. How lucky am I to play music? You know how much I love to play live. It’s been my lifeblood to play for you guys. You’ve been absolutely magnificent. I will never be touring again, but I may do something in the future — a one-off thing — but that’s miles away. I want to appreciate my family, my sons, my husband, everything. I’ve earned it.”

When his farewell tour was announced, the star had assured fans it didn't mean he was retiring completely. He said: "I’ll still be involved in music. I can't not be involved in music." He added at the time: "The emotion you get back from someone who doesn’t know you, you don’t know them... But for that one song you are one with them ... that's greatest feeling you can have."
