When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit their senior royal roles and left their Windsor home in 2020, their plan was to split their time between north America and the UK.

However things haven't quite gone as they planned and they're now raising their family in California with very little time contact with King Charles, Prince William and the rest of the Royal Family. According to a royal expert, the growing tensions between Harry and his family means his one wish for his children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet might not come true.

Speaking to OK Magazine, Jennie Bond claimed: "Harry has spoken about wanting his children to understand their legacy and to feel equally at home in the UK as they do in America. By now, they must be proper little Californians with minimal understanding of their British heritage".

As well as Harry's tensions with his father, Meghan reportedly has very little interest in coming back to the drama of her husband's homeland.

However there are hopes that King Charles' cancer diagnosis may make Harry think about his relationship with his family, with Jennie saying it could "focus his mind".

She said: "Life events like this, though, focus the mind, and I'm sure Harry will be dwelling on the fact that his children have virtually no relationship with their paternal grandfather – or maternal grandfather – at the moment. Time and life are marching on, and scares like this will certainly make Harry think hard about the future."

There is another reason which could limit Archie and Lilibet's time in the UK - Harry's on-going security row. Since the Sussex's taxpayer-funded police protection was removed in 2020, Harry claims it has been difficult for him to share his home country with his children. In a witness statement made in his legal challenge against the Home Office, he said "it was with great sadness for both of us that my wife and I felt forced to step back from this role and leave the country in 2020. The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the US. That cannot happen if it’s not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil. I cannot put my wife in danger like that and, given my experiences in life, I am reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too".

Lawyers for the Home Office have said that Harry can still have police protection on occasion, but it won't be automatic as it once was, instead, they will provide "bespoke arrangements, specifically tailored to him".
