A self-proclaimed ‘mob wife’ says she can spot the fakers after the mob wife aesthetic trend went viral.

Becky Litvintchouk says she is a true mob wife, and claims “you can’t fake it”. She was speaking out in response to the TikTok trend which sees women dress in a way inspired by movie and TV 'mob' wives - big hair, fur coats and glam outfits.

The 39-year-old Becky grew up in a working-class area of Brooklyn, New York, and married at 20. When her husband - a businessman - started making money, they moved “out of the hood” and into the leafy suburbia of Long Island, she says.

The businesswoman and mum-of-four describes herself as “Italian passing", and admits that she has now reembraced the look after trying to fit in with her middle-class surroundings for a while.

Becky warned people taking up a new trend of dressing in the ‘’mob style" that the lifestyle “is not as romantic as they think.” She said: “I now embrace the mob wife aesthetic, whereas before I felt like I had to conform to the suburban lifestyle.

“There’s a sense of community in the hood where I come from. Everyone is roughing it, and everyone is just trying to survive, and that never really leaves you. I have tried to be live like a nice middle-class woman for years – I’ve had enough. I just wanna be who I am – a true mob wife. I like to throw f-bombs, I like to party, and I like to drink. We’re rough around the edges."

Becky went on to describe what the look entails. She said: “It’s more of an extreme aesthetic – there’s big fur coats, big hair, lots of jewellery, in a way it’s a sign of overcompensating of having life that you are more used to seeing from the outside looking in.” Despite having moved to Long Island years ago, she is regularly asked where she grew up - likely because people can hear the “Brooklyn twang in her.”

Becky continued: “When we moved here everyone had their white picket fences, their two cars etc. It was a big culture shock. Plus everyone is so involved in their kid’s schools. When I was at school my mum never went to any school function as she was always working - we never really saw our parents.”

The look exploded on TikTok in January, and became so hotly discussed that even the director of The Godfather Francis Ford Coppola commented on it. He likened the aesthetic to Connie Corleone, a character from the film portrayed by his sister, Talia Shire who he termed “a sultry, delightful Italian princess.”

One of the mainstays of the look involves throwing a fur coat over an all-black outfit, and Becky says having “big hair” is also essential. We live in a place now where everybody's wealthy, but it’s always daddy’s money, whereas the mob aesthetic is your own blood, sweat, and tears. It’s not like we were handed down a family business – we are self-made," she said,,

Becky, who runs a company which sells wipes for use ‘before and after sex’ called ‘Get Dirty’, says her life has consisted of “a lot of ups and downs financially.” She recalls one instance a few years ago when she went to the supermarket and went to pay, only to find all of her accounts were empty.

“Those were scary times, and that was after we had made money and got out of the hood. Now for the last seven years things have been financially stable, but that fear never goes away," she said. "I’m happy in a way to be going back to my routes and wearing the real mob wife aesthetic.”

One woman who dresses in "mob wife aesthetic" every day - and says the style "exudes confidence" and "makes women feel powerful" is Sarah Arcuri. The 29-year-old has been dressing the same way for years - in a style which has recently been dubbed 'mob wife aesthetic'.
