Prince William's cheeky nine-word joke to Kate's dad confirmed by lip reader

When Kate and Prince William got married back in 2011, all eyes were on the Westminster Abbey ceremony. So when William made a cheeky nine-word quip to his new father-in-law, there was no way that it would go entirely unnoticed. Michael Middleton, Kate's father, played a central role in the proceedings as he walked his daughter down the aisle to give her away, and William took the opportunity to try and make Michael laugh, a lip reader has revealed.

The Princess of Wales is well known to be really close with both her parents Carole and Michael and her two siblings, Pippa and James, with Pippa acting as her bridesmaid on the big day too, and it has been widely reported that William has got on well with them too over the years.

Before they even entered the ceremony - which was watched by millions of people on television, had crowds of wellwishers outside and 1900 guests in the Abbey itself - Michael made sure to check in with his daughter, asking if she was okay before they headed inside and had a quick chat with the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Once they reached the altar, William said to Kate, "You look lovely. You look beautiful," according to Tina Lannin, a professional lip reader, reports CBS News. Kate had opted for a piece designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen for her bridal gown and it featured a nine-foot train and four embroidered emblems representing the UK: the English rose, the Scottish thistle, the Welsh daffodil, and the Irish shamrock.

After greeting Kate, William turned to her father and made a quick joke: "We're supposed to have just a small family affair," he said, according to the expert lip reader.

At King Charles' coronation in May 2023, the Middletons were all present and correct for the historic day, which saw Prince George act as a Page of Honour for his grandfather and William pay homage to the new monarch and promise to be his "liege man of life and limb". A royal author claimed recently that William was "insistent that his wife's family be properly included."

The author - Robert Hardman - added that it was "very important" to the new Prince of Wales, and he made a "direct request" that both of Kate's parents and her two siblings be involved on the big day.
