Scandals have plagued fashion weeks across the world

New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week… they're the places to be seen if you're a big name celeb, or a newcomer wanting to be seen on the front row.

It’s a fight to the death to nab the exclusive invites to the couture shows, where famous faces can rub shoulders with the fashion elite, including Anna Wintour, who is so icy she even keeps her infamous sunglasses on indoors so she doesn’t make eye contact with any Z-list celeb. While it’s a who’s who of Hollywood and music at the big designer shows, it hasn’t always been plain sailing on the runway.

Here, we look at the biggest scandals to plague fashion week around the world…

Gigi Hadid’s runway invader

Back in October 2019, Gigi Hadid was forced to haul a prankster off the runway during Chanel’s hotly-anticipated show during Paris Fashion Week. The runway was created to look like the rooftops of Paris, and the models - including Gigi - walked casually around the set as they showed off their gorgeous ensembles.

YouTuber and comedian Marie Benoliel then jumped onto the runway, wearing a Chanel-inspired tweed monochrome outfit, and tried her best to infiltrate the runway, much to the horror of the star-studded audience. While security guards failed to identify who they were supposed to be escorting out of the show, Gigi stepped in and blocked Marie’s way, before escorting her off the runway.

During New York Fashion Week in 2019, the beginnings of a bitter feud began. Marc Jacobs usually closes the week with a show that starts at 6pm, but he was kicked off the closing spot by Rihanna, who’s Savage X Fenty lingerie show was to begin at 7.30pm. But, Marc then delayed his show by an hour and a half, and there were rumours it was because of his fury over being booted from the closing spot.

Attendees were then forced to choose between Rihanna’s show, which was due to begin immediately after his, or stay for Marc’s delayed presentation, causing outrage. The designer later apologised for the kerfuffle, and while he didn’t acknowledge the reason for the delay, he admitted he regretted making people late. “I sincerely apologize to anyone and everyone who was inconvenienced by my lateness at our Spring/Summer 2019 fashion show. For anyone interested, below is not a list of excuses but rather a list of facts. I fully understand people have plans, lives, commitments, flights, families to return to, etc and that I fully RESPECT,” he wrote on Instagram.

It wasn’t just Marc Jacobs and Rihanna who had beef with each other during 2019’s NYFW. Nicki Minaj and Cardi B were involved in a violent altercation following the Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party, which left the Bodak Yellow hitmaker with a huge bump on her head. Footage from the fight showed Cardi lunging at Nicki and her security team, after the Anaconda rapper allegedly made a disparaging comment about Cardi’s parenting skills.

The Hustlers star even threw one of her shoes at her bitter rival, and was escorted out of the event by security. One eyewitness told The Guardian they saw Nicki having a conversation with another guest when Cardi lunged at the rapper, and it appeared she was retaliating for comments Nicki had made about her daughter Kulture. “But when you mention my child, when you choose to like comments about me as a mother, make comments about my abilities to take care of my daughter is when all bets are f****n off!” she fumed in a post on Instagram.

Back in 2016, there was huge hype around Kanye West's Yeezy clothing line, and he was due to present his season four show during New York Fashion Week on one of the hottest days in the city. The event didn’t get off to a good start, as attendees were driven to the show on Roosevelt Island on buses with no air conditioning or water.

The show was then delayed, despite it taking place during the hottest part of the afternoon, and models were dressed where they stood on the field. However, some were forced to sit down as the heat became unbearable, with one even fainting mid-show. And the disasters didn’t stop there. During the runway portion of the presentation, models were unable to walk in the Yeezy shoes, so ditched them and walked the rest of the way barefoot.
