Happy National Pizza Day to all the folks desperately searching for an excuse to order a Domino's tonight, not that you need one.

Whilst debate remains over which toppings should be considered high treason (pineapple, we're looking at you), we can all agree that nothing beats a fresh slice of pizza for dinner. But whether you're a stuffed-crust kind of person, or love a crispy base - what is the etiquette around eating the world famous food?

Do you have to use a knife and fork? Tear off parts as you go? In fact, can't you just roll it up into one huge burrito and eat it in one? William Hanson, Etiquette coach Director at The English Manner, has set the record straight.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, the expert confirmed that pizzas were "designed to be eaten with hands - clean hands, of course". He added: "Each slice is picked up and folded inwards. If the slice becomes a bit floppy, you can use your other hand to support it."

But in an era of endless pizza toppings, has etiquette changed from its early Margherita days? As Hanson points out: "You can now have whole fried eggs on pizzas and heavy chunks of meat and vegetables."

These types of pizzas can be a nightmare to hold, so to avoid dropping your toppings on the plate and making a mess - Hanson says you should use a knife and fork. The expert, whose etiquette tips often go viral on TikTok, added that deep-dish pizza - also known as Chicago-style pizza - must always be "eaten with a knife and fork".

If you ever find yourself roaming the streets of, well... Rome, you may stumble across pizza that is cut into square slices - aka 'Pizza al Taglio'. Peri Eagleton, owner of Italian food brand Seggiano, says these should also be consumed with your hands.

"Eating pizza a taglio with your hands is part of the experience," she told the Mirror. "The slices are usually thicker and more substantial, with a crispy crust on the bottom and a variety of toppings spread across the surface.

"The square shape makes them easy to pick up and enjoy without the need for utensils. Using a knife and fork to eat pizza a taglio would be considered unconventional and might even be frowned upon by purists who appreciate the simplicity and informality of this style of pizza."
