What Trinny Woodall eats in a day to stay fit after 'unhealthy habits'
Style expert Trinny Woodall, who today celebrates her 60th birthday, has always had a down-to-earth approach to looking good and for years has helped others through her TV shows, appearances and videos to make simple changes to how they dress and how to make beauty regimes easier when life is hectic.
It’s not uncommon for her to share a clip of herself in the bathroom in the morning, make-up free with bags under her eyes after little sleep as she shows how she transforms herself using products from her skincare and beauty line in five minutes so she can face the world and get on with her busy day.
She regularly posts clips on various scenarios, such as how to dress for a date, or how to cull your wardrobe and in 2022 she also revealed how she changed her diet to improve the way she feels and to stay healthier for longer.
Trinny admitted that she used to eat a lot of sugar and bread and loved picking but it wasn’t doing her any favours as she got older. 'I have some very unhealthy habits,” she said in the Instagram video. “I love sugar and I love bread and I love grazing. What I found as I reached that perimenopausal age is that my metabolism changed and suddenly it was having a negative effect on my body.”
Having realised she needed to make some changes, she says that she still has bread at the weekends, when she also enjoys her “extra special Saturday treat” of a Daim bar, but during the week she’s revolutionised her diet.
Dr Michael Mosley shares exercise that can cut cholesterol and blood pressureNow instead of loads of bread or two croissants, Trinny enjoys a frittata made with two eggs and some broccoli because it’s packed full of protein, which is a great way to start the day. When she doesn’t have that she eats a “seed breakfast” which consists of oat milk and mixed seeds and cauliflower rice with desiccated coconut.
For lunch, she always has fish and rice or chicken and rice or quinoa because it’s filling and it’s got good protein and nutritional balance.
At night for dinner, which she tries to have as early as possible to help digestion, she tends to have soup but with chicken and lots of vegetables or rice in it. Alongside the soup she enjoys a large slice of sourdough, and “lashings of butter and cheese”. Twenty minutes later, for dessert, she reaches for a pot of yoghurt and berries and breaks up half a bar of dark chocolate to sprinkle on the top.
Her trainer Nat Hayward, features in the video and adds: “If you’re gonna go for fruit, go for berries, they’re amazing.” This is because they contain lots of antioxidants and are low glycemic so there’s less sugar and the sugar there is is released more slowly in your body. Plus they contain lots of fibre.
Nat also reveals her snack hack for those with a sweet tooth, which she admits she has. She uses cottage cheese because it’s high in protein and reasonably low in fat. Because we do need good fats, she adds nuts and uses brazil nuts which are “absolutely incredible for our thyroid because they’re very high in selenium”. However, she warns you should have no more than three as too much selenium can be dangerous. She adds a couple of walnuts and some almonds too.
She recommends soaking almonds and seeds overnight in water and a little salt as it activates the nutrients and gets rid of the phytic acid which is a protective layer around them. This way they’ll taste great and you’ll absorb more of the nutrients too.
Then she adds berries, a little honey or maple syrup, and cinnamon which is a natural antiviral and antifungal and mixes it together. The snack is so good because it contains protein, so you don’t get an insulin spike - which causes fat storage - nutrients and fibre from the berries, good fats, zinc, Omega-3 and vitamin E from the nuts. Nat says it will keep you feeling full for a long time too.
