Prince William made a cheeky dig at Hollywood legend Tom Cruise as he returned to work following King Charles and Princess Kate's medical issues.
The heir to the throne has been off work for several weeks caring for Kate, who underwent abdominal surgery, and during the break his father his father was diagnosed with cancer. But he was back to royal duties today, spending the morning at an investiture ceremony in Windsor before heading to London for a gala dinner for the London Air Ambulance tonight, during which he spoke publicly about Kate and Charles for the first time since the royal medical updates.

Prince William shares a joke with Tom Cruise (POOL/AFP via Getty Images)As well as thanking people for their "kind messages of support" in recent weeks, he also lightened the mood with a few jokes - one directed at his "fellow pilot" Tom Cruise, a nod to his famous Top Gun and Mission Impossible roles. Speaking about how the London Air Ambulance fleet needs two new helicopters by September to continue the vital work it does across the capital, he said: "I should also take this opportunity to give a mention to my - our - fellow pilot, Tom Cruise. Tom, huge thanks for supporting us tonight.
"And if you wouldn't mind not borrowing either of the new helicopters for the next Mission Impossible, it would be appreciated. We have all seen on our screens that - how can I put it - you seem to have a different take on 'normal wear and tear' to the rest of us. It's not the kind that buffs out, that's for sure."

Tom Cruise is surprisingly close to the Royal Family, with the actor having roles in both the late Queen's Jubilee and King Charles' Coronation. Many fans are often baffled to see his name listed on programmes, but their link dates back to the late 90s. When he was dating Nicole Kidman, he met the late Princess Diana and went on to become "chums" with her. He was said to be devastated upon hearing of her death following a tragic car accident in 1997.

Kate and Wills walked the red carpet with Tom at the premier for the Top Gun: Maverick.
Elsewhere in speech, Prince William joked about things had become rather "medically focused" within his family in recent weeks. He said: "I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you, also, for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days. It means a great deal to us all.
"It's fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather “medical” focus. So I thought I'd come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all!"
