Emily Blunt disappointed fans as she confirmed The Devil Wears Prada sequel will never happen.

The British actress shot to fame in the hit 2006 movie, alongside Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci, and rumours of a sequel have been swirling for years. The film followed recent graduate Andy, played by Oscar winner Anne, who lands a job at the prestigious fashion magazine Runway, working as an assistant to the publication’s terrifying editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl.

The film was hailed by critics, and even landed Meryl an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the cruel yet fragile magazine editor, who is forced to see her marriage crumble as she tries to keep her job as boss of the fashion bible. Back in 2021, director David Frankel teased fans as he said movie execs had “toyed with the idea” of a sequel, but no news was ever confirmed, until now.

Emily, 40, revealed The Devil Wears Prada sequel will never be in the works because the original cast don't want to make one, as there’s never been “momentum” with creating a follow-up. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she told host Josh Horowitz that she and her co-stars want to “preserve” the success of the first movie without ruining it with an unnecessary sequel. “Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble and it’s okay,” the Oscar-nominated actress explained.

“And I think – didn’t Meryl say something funny about it? They asked her about it, ‘Would she ever do a sequel?’ and she went, ‘Yeah, if I don’t have to lose the weight.’ But I think she said ‘the f***ing weight,’” Emily laughed. The actress was referring to Meryl’s infamous quote she gave to Access Hollywood back in 2012, when she was quizzed on the red carpet about a possible sequel. “Yeah...no, no, is there one? I've never heard about it. But, sure, I mean I'd have to lose the f***ing weight, but I would do that, yeah, “ she replied, according to Elle.

Back in 2018, Emily admitted she had mixed emotions over a sequel, and feared it would “dilute” the magic of the first movie. “If everyone did it, I would be up for it,” she told People. “I almost hope it doesn't [happen] because I think sometimes when you sequel everything kind of dilutes how special the original is," she explained.

In 2022, Anne was quizzed on her feelings regarding a sequel, and the actress confessed she didn’t think it was going to happen. “I just think that movie was in a different era, you know? Now, everything's gone so digital, and that movie centred around the concept of producing a physical thing. It's just very different now,” she said during an appearance on The View.
