Benedict Cumberbatch unrecognisable as he transforms with long hair and beard
Benedict Cumberbatch looks totally different as he sports a long beard and hair for his latest role.
The award-winning actor is set to star in a new biblical comedy drama titled The Book of Clarence. He plays the role of tramp Benjamin, who then gets a chance encounter with Jesus. The character is then given the ability to multiply coins and with his new wealth gets a whole new makeover.
Benjamin then goes around the town throwing money at people. However, he gets crucified because the Romans think he is another "messiah". In photos shared of the upcoming film, Benedict has totally transformed with long brown locks and bushy beard. The actor can be seen hanging from a wooden cross in the still from his new role.
Benedict is best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock, where he starred alongside Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington. The 47-year-old has gone on to star in huge Hollywood films including Doctor Strange, The Imitation Game and 12 Years A Slave.
The Oscar-winning actor has previously expressed remorse for his own family’s links to the slave trade. He suggested it was the reason why he took the role of William Pitt the Younger in the film Amazing Grace which is about the abolition of the trade. Benedict also received critical acclaim for his leading role as plantation owner William Ford in 12 Years a Slave more than a decade ago.

Back in 2021, Benedict was seen remarkably "aged" as he starred as an old man for his lead role as forgotten British artist Louis Wain. The Marvel star was almost unrecognisable as he donned unkempt white hair, moustache and beard and of skin ageing prosthetics.
The Electrical Life of Louis Wain told the character's life through several different decades. During other scenes, Benedict appeared as an attractive middle-aged man with thick mousey brown moustache, smartly dressed and full of life. Away from work, Benedict is happily married to Sophie Hunter after 17 years of friendship.
The couple wed in the Isle of Wight on Valentine’s Day 2015. Benedict and Sophie welcomed their first son, Christopher, four months after their big day. Their second child, Hal, was born in March 2017. They then went on to welcome their third son Finn in 2019. Benedict and Sophie keep their children out of the spotlight.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain about being a dad, Benedict said: “I want them to know what I do for a living and they can’t always because of the certification of my films, we’ll all be a lot older by the time they get to see them. I would definitely like to do some child-friendly work in the future, I’ve done a bit but there might be a bit more of that."
Parents have also expressed they would love to see Benedict in a child-friendly role. The Marvel star beat other A-listers such as Christian Bale, David Tennant, and Tom Hardy in a list by parents of which celebrities they would most like to see appear on a children's TV show.
