Inside King Charles' cancer treatment plan after unexpected diagnosis

King Charles announced today he has cancer - and his treatments have already begun.

A statement from Buckingham Palace on Monday evening confirmed the monarch is facing "a form of cancer", which was uncovered after a "separate issue of concern was noted" while he was receiving hospital treatment for his benign enlarged prostate last week.

Within the same statement, the King also revealed he has already started "regular treatments", and he is said to have a "wholly positive" outlook on his diagnosis.

The statement reads: "During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties."

While the monarch has been told by doctors not to take part in any of his public-facing duties while he undergoes treatment. But he will continue to handle "state business and official paperwork as usual", Buckingham Palace said. It is unclear how long King Charles' cancer treatment is expected to last, but the Palace's statement did confirm he is "looking forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible."

The monarch stressed his gratitude to medical staff for uncovering the cancer. The statement said: "The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

The Palace added: "His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

Buckingham Palace declined to confirm the type of cancer King Charles has, but the news comes just one day after the monarch - who acceded to the throne just 17 months ago - was last seen on Sunday when he attended church in Sandringham.

Last week, the King was admitted to hospital for treatment on his enlarged prostate. Charles, 75, was seen entering The London Clinic in London on Friday morning with the Queen at his side. It is the same hospital where the Princess of Wales is recovering after undergoing successful abdominal surgery last week and it is understood the King has visited her.

The news announced last week came just an hour and a half after Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales was recovering in hospital after undergoing abdominal surgery, and would be recuperating and away from official duties for up to three months.
