When Prince Harry first stumbled across Meghan Markle on a mutual friend's Instagram back in 2016, it wasn't long before the couple started a relationship, after they swapped numbers and furiously exchanged messages before they finally got to meet in person for the first time.

In Harry's memoir Spare and the couple's six-part Netflix documentary, the details of their romance were laid bare, but even before these more recent revelations, when the couple first got engaged, Harry was pretty candid about their relationship and admitted that there had been at least one struggle when it came to introducing Meghan to his family members.

In an interview that the couple gave to officially announce their engagement back in November 2017, they were asked about what it had been like to meet each other's families and integrate with them.

Meghan answered that Harry's family had been "so welcoming" to her and that both the late Princess Diana's family and the House of Windsor had been "great", with Harry noting that she had "met quite a few of them actually".

"I have! On both sides of his family. His mum's side as well which has been really important to me too. But yes the family has been great, and over the past year and a half, we've just had a really nice time getting to know them and progressively helping me feel a part of not just the institution but also part of the family, which has been really, really special," Meghan explained.

Harry noted that getting everyone together while still managing to keep their relationship low-key and out of the public eye hadn't always been easy, however, especially given the conflicting schedules of the working royals.

"Trying to track [the family] down and make sure that they're around at the same time that she's popping in without telling too many people." Harry explained, "We've managed, we've actually done incredibly well, and to make sure you've met all the key people."

In their engagement interview, Meghan also noted how "incredible" it was for her to meet the late Queen, and Harry joked that his grandmother's pet corgis were immediately big fans of his partner upon meeting her.

Later, in their Netflix documentary, the couple discussed their engagement interview with Meghan calling it an "orchestrated reality show" and saying it was "rehearsed" and that she and Harry "weren't allowed to tell our story because they didn't want [that]".

The journalist who conducted the interview, Mishal Husain, responded to Meghan's claims on the Today Show by saying: "We know recollections may vary on this particular subject but my recollection is very much 'asked to do an interview and do said interview'".
