We all know how important it is to keep our homes ventilated - even in winter - but it sadly can encourage creepy crawlies to enter our space, including flies.

The buzzing sound they make as they fly around the rooms is enough to set anyone's teeth on edge. However, one woman thinks she's found a way to stop the insects from entering her kitchen and the nifty little trick didn't cost her a single penny to do - though the hack does involve a few coins.

Taking to the Facebook group, Hinch Army Cleaning Tips, the woman revealed all about how to rid your home of flies.

She shared a photo of a clear plastic bag hanging from her kitchen window. Inside the bag is some water and six shiny pennies. She explained: "After seeing someone post about the water-filled bag and coins to stop flies, I thought I'd give it a try.

"We normally always have about five/six small flies just flying about in the middle of the kitchen. So annoying. Well since the bag has been up I haven't had a single fly in the kitchen! Amazing."

Her post quickly went viral, with many people asking how it works. She did a bit of research on the matter so she could provide them with an answer.

She claims: "The water and the pennies create a prism that reflects colours and also projects the image of the water. Flies don't like water and they don't like the colours given off from the pennies."

She added: "Flies have compound eyes, so the bags look like a giant body of water to them, therefore they leave."

Whether or not this is true, is yet to be seen, but some people in the comments said they'd tried the hack for themselves and hadn't seen any flies in the house either.

One person replied: "It's been up since 9am and we've had no new flies in the house yet. So far so good!!" A second wrote: "This trick also works outdoors. I hang one on my balcony and the flies are gone."

Another said: "This is amazing. I'm going to give it a go." Someone else suggested using Coke and sugar or honey in a bag outside to keep wasps outside of the house.

Others were concerned they'd be too clumsy and pop the bag, spilling water everywhere. "Knowing my husband, the d**k would pop it," joked a different user.
