A bride-to-be has shared her hen-do ‘horror' after her maid-of-honour told her she was expected to pay her own way for her ‘destination’ hen party. After assuming the cost would be covered by her bridesmaids and attendees, she revealed her ‘extreme disappointment’ after being told she was expected to pay around £315 ($400) for the privilege of the party.

She said: “She keeps saying it’s a ‘destination party’ even though it’s an hour and a half drive away. I’m not even having or expecting a bridal shower. Is it too much to expect a little spoiling?” She fumed, before adding: “I told her she didn’t have to get make-up or hair done and she could buy one of those convertible bridesmaids dresses for £24 ($30) on Amazon. This whole process has been super disappointing."

However, after revealing her wedding woe on Reddit, she was shocked to find that many readers weren’t on her side: “You're not special, you don't deserve to be paid for when it's something to do with your wedding,” said one, while another said: “So many brides seem to think ‘a little spoiling’ means their closest friends being at their beck and call for nine months, and footing the bill for the privilege.”

However some were more team bride: “I’ve been a bridesmaid five times and have always paid for my own dress and split the bride’s cost for the bachelorette with everyone else attending," said one, while another commented: “I genuinely think the pendulum has swung so far from ‘brides expect everything from their bridesmaids’ to ‘bridesmaids expect not to have to do anything inconvenient for a friend’.”

Another said bluntly: "Someone who you love and care about is getting married, so you make it special for them? Honestly This is why I’m so glad I chose not to have a wedding party.”
