Call The Midwife actor Olly Rix has revealed that his time on the beloved BBC show may be coming to a close.

The actor, who plays Matthew Aylward, joined the show in series 10 as Nurse Trixie Franklin's love interest. His character tied the knot with Trixie (played by Helen George) last year, however reports suggested Olly was set to be written out of the show. It was claimed Olly's sudden departure left his co-stars "stunned and upset" by the news.

It comes after the cast believed he would be classed as a "mainstay" on the series following Matthew's wedding to Trixie last year. The cast, as of the latest series, includes Jenny Agutter, Judt Parfitt, Stephen McGann, Linda Bassett and Laura Main. Olly has since opened up on the rumours and teased an exit.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, he said: "It's great being part of the Call the Midwife family. For now." He teased fans with upcoming plot twists as well, saying: "You've got to watch to the end of this series. There are a few surprises ahead, a few bumps in the road. We'll see how much longer I'm part of the family!"

The Sun reported last November that the heartthrob was 'axed' from the show, to the surprise of his fellow cast members. Olly tied the knot with Helen George's senior nurse Trixie Franklin on screen last February. When asked about his plans for the future, the actor hinted at potential work across the pond.

He attended the event alongside co-stars including Jenny Agutter and newcomers Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry. The 37 year old couldn't help but shower praise on his co-star Helen who takes on the lead role in the iconic musical at London's Dominion Theatre. Despite rumours Olly might leave Poplar, he doesn't seem keen on going. Last February, he commented: "I don't know. One never really knows but as far as I'm concerned, I'm not looking for the next thing."

"I'm not looking to catch the next branch. I'm gripping the branch I'm on at the moment and giving it everything I've got." Last summer Olly separated from his makeup artist girlfriend Natasha Fagri after seven years together, allegedly drifting apart due to work commitments.

A source told The Sun on Sunday:“Olly and Natasha were very happy together for a long time, but eventually drifted apart due to work commitments. They have a lot of respect for each other and share custody of their pet dog. They are both busy with work and focusing on their future and different projects.” Olly's break-up came not long after his co-star Helen's relationship with actor Jack Ashton came to a sudden end.

The 39-year-old actress, who plays Trixie on the BBC show and is Olly’s on-screen wife, said in a statement: “Some months ago, we separated. Our two beautiful girls remain the focus and I respectfully ask for privacy for this next chapter.” A source also said to the Mirror the couple had drifted apart, saying: “Helen and Jack’s decision to end their relationship has been amicable, and no one else is involved. They have just grown apart as a couple. Until now, only their closest friends and family have known what is going on, but in recent weeks it has been shared more widely.

“They are both incredibly committed to working together to be the best parents they can for their two daughters.” In November, Olly was spotted meeting up with ex Natasha in a London cafe. Olly and co-star Helen are said to have been supporting each other through their breakups.

Helen was spotted leaving Olly's London home as a spokesperson told The Mirror at the time: "Yes, she went to visit a friend for a cup of tea - like all friends do - and as we have always said, there is nothing more to this."
