Erik ten Hag insists Jadon Sancho's decision "to go public" was ultimately his downfall at Manchester United.

The winger had underwhelmed in his first two seasons at Old Trafford and was left out for the defeat at Arsenal back in September. Ten Hag claimed that was down to his training performances with Sancho hitting back on social media, claiming he'd been a "scapegoat" at the club.

His outburst proved to be to his detriment with Ten Hag opting to shun the player following those remarks. Sancho wasn't allowed to train with the first-team and has since been loaned out to Borussia Dortmund. The United boss has been keen to implement an element of discipline since being appointed.

The likes of Marcus Rashford have overstepped the mark but been reprimanded and then returned to the fold. Ten Hag maintains that the fact the club could deal with the problems behind closed doors were crucial - something he couldn't do with Sancho. He said: "We can sort out everything internally. Jadon chose to go public."

The Dutchman also added: "First of all, the players at this level need to manage themselves, that is what you can demand from the player. The player has to know what is good and not good. When you want to play top football, it demands a certain way of life. Always."

Rashford has found himself in hot water, not for the first time this season. The United forward went out and celebrated his birthday hours after the Red Devils were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City at Old Trafford with Ten Hag claiming it was "unacceptable".

Last week he was pictured going into a Belfast nightclub and then missed training, reporting ill, before he was left out of the FA Cup win at Newport County. There was never any talk of his exit however with Ten Hag able to iron out the situation with Rashford.

Sancho though looks to have no future whilst the Dutchman is at the helm in Manchester. The situation will become an issue in the summer once he returns from Germany with a move to Saudi Arabia already being touted.
