When you're travelling by plane, the last thing you want to do is end up rowing with the person sitting next to you.

Drama over seating is common on planes, and it's generally accepted that if you've booked a specific seat, you shouldn't be made to move or give it up for someone else. But one woman was left baffled when she needed to move out of her seat because "something was wrong" with it - as she was met with an odd response when she tried to sit in an empty chair.

The woman said she spoke to a flight attendant and was told it would be fine for her to move to an empty seat in the row across from her own. When she tried to sit in it, however, the woman sitting next to the empty chair told her she "wasn't allowed" - despite nobody having booked it.

In a post on Reddit, the woman said: "Only one person is in the row across from me, and when I sit down, she has a call on speaker talking to a hotel about her room tonight, demanding a room in a specific 'tower'. Annoying. But whatever. I put my earbuds in.

"Something was wrong with my seat, however, so when the boarding doors closed I politely asked the flight attendant if I could move across the aisle to the empty seat next annoying speakerphone lady. The flight attendant says yes, so I went to sit down. The annoying speaker phone lady tried to stop me, and started arguing with me that I could not sit there because the seat was 'empty' and I was not allowed."

The flight attendant told the angry passenger that the woman had permission to sit in the seat, but she "kept arguing" over it. Eventually, the woman asked her if she had "paid for the empty seat", and when it turned out she hadn't, the woman sat down and ignored the "sulking" passenger.

But it didn't stop there, as the passenger made sure to be as irritating as possible to punish the woman for sitting next to her. "She takes off her smelly trainers and puts her feet in the small pocket of the seat in front of her like a little foot hammock. Starts rocking her feet and moving the seat in front of her for about 20 minutes," the post continued.

"She gets crisps. 3-4 bags. Eats them with her mouth open so loudly I can hear her over my movie and gets crumbs all over the place - the floor, my arm, herself. All over her seat when we left. Finally, I look over and she is picking her nose."

Commenters on the post were quick to tell the woman she should have retaliated with her own obnoxious behaviour, while others simply condemned the angry passenger's actions. One person said: "This is what the cabin crew are for. Speak to them and ask them to intervene. That or retaliate in kind," while another said: "What a wonderful lady. She gave me a laugh! Entitled and petty."
