A 'traumatised' pub worker is being given urgent support after a dead newborn baby was found in the venue's toilet during a busy Sunday carvery.

The Three Horse Shoes pub remained closed on Monday and issued an apology to its customers, many of whom were on the premises in Outlon, between Leeds and Wakefield, when the heartbreaking discovery was made. West Yorkshire Police have been on the scene since and are desperately searching for the mother over fears for her welfare.

It is understood a member of staff found the baby. The owners of the pub have decided to stay closed today out of concerns for their staff, and have issued two statements on their Facebook page which were quickly met with support from the local community.

The first statement said: "I've been writing post after post for the past hour but I don't think right now is the best time given the circumstances....We're sure there's speculation of something that happened at our establishment this evening. All I can say at the minute is I'm sorry to everyone that was in with us during the time this happened and to all that was due to come in and couldn't.

"A massive thank you to those that helped us whilst we were struggling as a team, it really doesn't go unappreciated. Lots of love Team Three Horse Shoes."

One woman who lives neighbouring the pub, who did not want to be named, told The Mirror: “It’s absolutely tragic. I only saw the news this morning while working from home and was shocked. I’ve only been to the pub a few times. The community is devastated.”

This morning, the pub also confirmed they would remain closed today after "careful consideration" for the welfare of their staff. Once again, they apologised to all of their customers. Many members of the public responded by expressing their sympathies. One said: "Absolutely heartbreaking so sorry to the member of staff who found the baby. Thinking of you all and that poor girl xx".

Another local added: "You don't have to apologise, how you continued to serve us and keep going while all what was happening is beyond me. To be honest I don't think anyone would have said anything if you just stopped. Hope you have all the support you all need." A third person wrote: "You guys need to take as much time off as you need why you just be going through is awful. Take care everyone."

West Yorkshire Police have appealed for the mother of the baby to get in contact with them. DCI James Entwistle of West Yorkshire Police, said: "This is a tragic incident and we are urgently appealing for the mother of the baby girl to contact us or seek medical help as she has been through an extremely traumatic ordeal and could well need treatment herself.
