Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are set to 'release funds' for a big January transfer - as they continue to be linked with signing a new striker.

The latest name to be rumoured to join the club is Fleetwood Town's Jack Marriott, who has eight goals in League One this season in just 19 games. Fleetwood sit bottom of League One, looking like they'll be in a relegation battle - and likely cannot afford to lose their top goal scorer without a replacement.

But despite this, Wrexham are reportedly willing to splash the cash to acquire Marriott - who has bagged 60 goals in the Championship and League One over the last eight seasons.

Wrexham have already scored 54 goals in 27 League Two matches, the fourth-highest tally this season, with Paul Mullin and Eliot Lee amongst the top scorers in the league.

Reynolds and McElhenney had came extremely close to signing Luke Armstrong from Harrogate Town in September, but were unable to file the necessary paperwork in time with the deal falling through.

And although the Red Dragons did bring in Steven Fletcher as a free agent, who has five goals in 14 games, they are still looking to add a striker.

League One top scorers Jonson Clarke Harris, Stephen Humphrys and Aaron Collins have all been of interest during the January transfer window. However, Wrexham are believed to be zeroing in on Marriott. The former Derby County and Peterborough forward is attracting interest from several League One sides keen to take him from Fleetwood.

Stevenage and Oxford United have both been linked with Marriott, with the latter having a summer transfer offer of around £500,000 turned down. Fleetwood paid Peterborough nearly £250,000 a year ago to sign Marriott, but just a year into his two-and-a-half year contract, he is believed to be available for the right price.

Multiple reports have suggested that Fleetwood were looking to offload the experienced striker due to his high wages, which are among the highest in League One.

The signing of Ronan Coughlan from Waterford this month has given Charlie Adam more options, and with Fleetwood struggling at the bottom of League One, they could do with a siege mentality throughout the squad.

Marriott hasn't done much wrong this season, but he has been on the bench for two of Fleetwood's last three matches, suggesting an exit could be on the cards.
