Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would be "jealous" if King Charles decided to abdicate and his son Prince William became monarch, a commentator has claimed.

The monarch is in the hospital as he recovers from surgery after being diagnosed with an enlarged prostate and while there is no suggestion he might abdicate, royal author Peter Lloyd called for him to do so, leaving the throne to his eldest son. He added he "would love" to see the reaction of Harry and Meghan should this happen.

He said during a debate on GB News: "I think that King Charles should abdicate and I think that Prince William should step up and do the job, purely because I would love to see the reaction of Harry and Meghan. Imagine how delicious that would be to see them foaming at the mouth over William becoming King?"

Journalist and columnist, Nina Myskow, asked why Harry and Meghan, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020, would "foam at the mouth", reports the Express. Mr Lloyd added: "Well, they'd be wild and jealous, Nina. Catherine would be Queen."

But Ms Myskow pointed out that Charles "waited this long" to become King so he "is not going to go easily", adding: "In terms of the engagements that he's carried out, he carries out about three or four times the engagements that William does." And while many have praised William for staying by his wife Catherine's side as she recovers from abdominal surgery in hospital, the journalist said he is "an entitled shirker", arguing that instead of cancelling his engagements, he should take the helm.

She added: "Honestly that seems ridiculous to me. He should be doing his share." Catherine's announcement regarding her health confirmed she would be out of action until after Easter.

Earlier today, Queen Camilla visited Charles for the third time in hospital. She smiled as she arrived at The London Clinic in central London by car just before midday. She left the hospital just over three hours later, at 3.10pm.

It is the same hospital where the Princess of Wales is being cared for following abdominal surgery. The Queen's visit on Sunday was her third to the private hospital since she arrived with Charles on Friday morning ahead of the procedure.

She told people inside The London Clinic on Friday that the King was "doing well" after the procedure. Charles took time to visit his daughter-in-law, Kate, who is on the 12th day of her hospital stay after undergoing a successful major operation last week.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman previously said the King was "admitted to a London hospital for scheduled treatment". The spokesman added: "His Majesty would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week and is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness."
