McTominay details tough Mourinho conversation the day he was sacked by Man Utd
Manchester United ace Scott McTominay was left 'gutted' the day Jose Mourinho was sacked.
The former Red Devils boss departed the Old Trafford hotseat in December 2018 following a defeat to Liverpool which saw his side 11 points removed from the top four. Mourinho guided United to a Europa League and Carabao Cup double in his first season in charge before finishing as runner-up in the Premier League and FA Cup in 2017/18.
In the aftermath of his decision, Mourinho met with some players to say farewell, including McTominay. The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss provided the Scotland international with his Manchester United debut in 2017 and tipped him as a future first team star.
Mourinho, who was recently sacked as Roma boss, awarded McTominay his manager's player of the year award in 2017/18. The 27-year-old made 31 appearances under the Special One to start his United career.
The midfielder could not help but thank the Portuguese coach for the opportunity he had provided and left him with a big compliment. McTominay revealed that he is still in touch with his former boss.
Marcel Sabitzer completes Man Utd transfer after last-minute deadline day dashHe told the High Performance Podcast : "On the day he left, I saw him in the corridor and he invited me in. I didn't know what to say. I was gutted. It was hard.
"This guy means so much to me and has given me all the dreams I could ever wish for, and now he's gone. I didn't know what to think. I was umming and aahing. I just said 'Thank you for the opportunity, you've been a real-life legend for me, good luck for what you do next'.
"We are still in touch sometimes, if I've had a good game he lets me know. He'll text saying 'well done kid' as he always calls me. They were great times and I'm so grateful for him."
McTominay continued to forge his way at Old Trafford following Mourinho's sacking and has now made 233 apperances for the Red Devils. This term has already seen Erik ten Hag's charge produce his most productive Premier League record having scored six goals and provided one assist.
