There was always one person in school who got stick for their surname.

It's something most parents carefully consider when choosing a name for their little one, but can make the arduous process even more difficult. In fact, one woman says deciding on a name is 'impossible' and blames it all on her husband's rude-sounding surname.

The couple already have a daughter named Charlotte, and so wanted a male name that would compliment it. Her husband has vetoed many of her suggestions due to the first syllable of his surname, which could easily be used as ammunition on the playground.

Taking to Mumsnet back in 2018, the unnamed mum-to-be revealed her husband surname is 'Cochrane'. She says her partner doesn't like any of her name suggestions because they all sound too rude when put together with it.

The woman wrote: "We are due in around 10 weeks and are really struggling to agree on any boys' names. Husband is extremely sensitive about how names sound with the first syllable of our surname, COCHRANE. We both liked Rafferty for a while before feeling that it is too ‘brave’ compared to Charlotte."

She continued to say that her husband has picked out the names Thomas, Arthur and Raphael. Her name choices meanwhile are Maxwell, Joseph and Zachary. She'd also come up with a few more ideas but her husband had turned them down.

"Finley (husband thinks could sound like ‘thin c**k’), Isaac (I agree with husband that this is inappropriate with our surname), Oliver (husband thinks could sound like ‘I love a c**k’)," she added. "What other names are there that could compliment Charlotte but don’t have any remote phallic connotation and go ok with Cochrane??!"

A number of people responded to the post and shared suggestions for other names. One cheekily replied: "Maybe not Max C**k sorry... I think your husband is very sensitive about it. Isaac doesn’t work well though because of the c at the end. Sebastian is nice and can be shortened."

A second wrote: "I suspect he's sensitive because he endured bullying himself." Someone else said: "This made me giggle but I think you are really smart to be thinking ahead like this. My sister worked with a Gaye Butt, Dick Malt and Dickie Blewer!!!"

A screenshot of the post was also shared on X/ Twitter, where people found the whole thing incredibly amusing. One person replied: "Hugh. Surely Hugh." Another tweeted: "'Rafferty is too brave.' God I love name posts on mom boards." While third added: "Isaac....took me a while to get the imagined issue there. People are nuts."
