Fury as disabled girl, 19, told she's 'not allowed in pub without parent'
A mum is fuming after her 19-year-old disabled daughter was allegedly told she couldn't enter a popular town centre pub alone.
Kayce Jackson, who has SWAN syndrome - Syndromes Without a Name, reportedly left The Crown and Cushion in tears earlier this month. She told her mum that she was no longer allowed in the pub unless she was with a parent or guardian.
This 'ridiculous' rule was shared on social media but later removed from Facebook and the pub has now clarified to StokeonTrentLive that no adult needs to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kayce, who celebrated her 18th birthday at the pub, has a genetic condition which has an unknown diagnosis and cannot be treated.
Her mum, Krystle Jackson, aged 38, from Biddulph, told StokeonTrentLive: "She had gone to the Cushion to say hello to my friends. She does it near enough every Sunday - they know Kayce. She's been brought up around pubs. I used to do the printing for the Cushion and I've cleaned in the pub.
"She was in there for less than five minutes and as she left she says she was told she wasn't allowed in anymore unless she had an adult with her. I was mortified, she's trying to get her independence, and she went back to Wetherspoons in tears. She is childlike for her age but she knows when she's in the wrong. She wasn't causing any issues, she just went in to say hello."
The Crown's Helena Bonham Carter urges controversial Netflix show to 'end now'The pub had introduced this new rule after receiving complaints from regulars about certain unaccompanied over-18s and children. In a now-deleted post read: "A few who are aged over 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those over the age of 18 will be informed as they next come in. Please do not take this personally and if we are doing this there will be a reason. As harsh as this may sound, please remember after all we are a pub - and not a creche."
The Crown and Cushion has since confirmed that no adult needs to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. An employee told StokeonTrentLive: "We don't stop anyone aged 18 or over from drinking here and they don't need adult supervision. Anyone aged 18 or over is welcome to come here for a drink. I wasn't here on that day so I can't say for sure what happened."
