'The Tories are fueling their electoral defeat with their anti-woke card'
Watching this Government crumbling into ashes is like eavesdropping on the final days of the Third Reich.
There, in the Downing Street bunker, are the sycophants, the backstabbers, the dead-eyed staffers and the dregs of the talent barrel trying to shore up support for the imploding regime by churning out propaganda about their enemies in the hope they can cling to their jobs. And looking more desperate than Yosser Hughes.
Take this week’s Sky News cringefest when two cabinet (stifle your laughter) “heavyweights” were ordered to blame the BBC for the Tories’ imminent annihilation at the polls. Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer tried to convince Kay Burley the corporation was consumed with left-wing bias without a scintilla of evidence, and was skewered and roasted like a suckling pig.
The next day, Transport Minister Huw Merriman confronted Burley with definitive evidence about the Beeb’s despicable anti-Tory agenda. But it turned out to be a segment from radio comedy show The News Quiz. As if the open goals the Tories score on an hourly basis is not fair game for satirists.
Merriman believed he’d brought out a smoking gun by claiming BBC social affairs correspondent “Neil Buchanan” gave “only one side” of the Universal Credit story. Turns out Neil Buchanan is the host of kids’ TV show Art Attack.

Their lamentable attempts to suck up to the right-wing media by putting culture wars at the forefront of their election campaign only shows how desperate and out of touch they have become. So fair play to Keir Starmer who, rather than joining them in the gutter, described their lashing out at so-called “woke” targets like the RNLI and the National Trust as “a kind of weird McCarthyism”.
He’s right. This weird agenda the Tories want voters to buy into is a smokescreen to hide the misery, division, economic decline and decimation of social fabric they have inflicted on Britain. It may excite right-wing newspapers and those woefully underwatched Fox-lite TV channels, whose only message seems to be that trans activists, Meghan Markle and Gary Lineker are the spawn of Satan. But the truth is, nobody really cares.
Exorcising the supposed evil of wokeness is way down the British electorate’s priorities hence the terrible viewing figures of those right-wing TV channels. Surveys show that half the nation doesn’t even know what woke means.
As for being an election winner, look no further than Ron DeSantis whose entire pitch to be the Republican’s presidential candidate was waging war on “the woke mind virus which is a form of cultural Marxism”. He has now dropped out of the race after being slaughtered in the first primary. By a potential jailbird.
DeSanctimonious as Trump called him was supposed to be a slicker, younger upgrade on the Donald. DeFuture in fact. Instead, he left the stage a broken man aptly mistaking a Budweiser beer slogan for a Churchillian quote. One US political pundit said it proved that “your average evangelical grandma in Iowa knows little about culture wars”.
Let’s hope the Tories keep playing this anti-woke card, yelling out their fake anger all the way to a similar electoral humiliation to DeSantis. Who will they blame their unpopularity on then? The woke BBC? Woke Twitter? Woke voters? Or people never really buying into the myth behind this pile of confected bull.
