Manchester United will attempt to commit Scott McTominay to a new long-term contract despite Erik ten Hag’s previous willingness to sell.

The Scottish midfielder has been a key performer for the Red Devils this season, with only £72m striker Rasmus Hojlund having scored more than him. McTominay, 27, has made 26 appearances in all competitions and scored six goals.

As it stands, the academy graduate faces an uncertain future. His current contract expires next summer with Man United running out of chances to secure a big fee for his services. The Red Devils are now trying to extend his stay. According to The Sun, they have ambitions of tying McTominay down to a new, long-term deal at Old Trafford.

It is suggested that McTominay has “won over” boss Erik ten Hag this season with his performances and is seen as part of the future. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also reportedly keen to invest in British players.

Should he remain a key member of the first team, then McTominay would be happy to sign. However, should he experience another reversal in fortunes and drop out of contention, there is no guarantee that he would agree.

McTominay has already experienced a rollercoaster season throughout 2023/24. He looked set to leave in the summer - Bayern Munich and West Ham linked with a swoop for the 41-time Scottish international.

He then forced himself back into Ten Hag’s thinking with a match-winning brace against Brentford. Speaking after that double, the Dutchman admitted that the midfielder could potentially have moved on.

Ten Hag said: “Every player has a price but he has a big value, sporting and also economic. I want to have a player like Scott McTominay in the squad. He is Manchester United in every faith.

“Every minute he will fight for the match. He is Manchester United in everything in his heart. When you are coming on and giving this to the team it tells a lot.”

"He is Manchester United in everything and in his heart,” the Red Devils’ boss added. ”So he's playing for the badge. He gives his life. And when you're coming on and you give this to the team, it tells a lot."

Ten Hag doubled down on that assessment a few months later as he handed McTominay the captain’s armband against Liverpool. He said: "I think he is one of the examples of what it means to play for Manchester United, to play with the badge on his heart.

"He is an example, and the others can take that and build on him. I'm sure he will be a communicator; I'm sure he will be an example of passion and desire, and you need that in these games."
