America Ferrera speaks out on Barbie controversy as fans fume over Oscars snubs
America Ferrera has spoken out on the Barbie controversy that has exploded online since the 2024 Oscars nominations were unveiled on Tuesday.
Nominations were announced for the 96th annual Academy Awards earlier this week. The glitzy ceremony will be hosted by American comedian Jimmy Kimmel and broadcast live from the Dolly Theatre in Hollywood next month.
A huge shock to many film buffs and Barbie movie fans was the fact that Margot Robbie received no recognition for playing Barbie in the hit flick of the summer of 2023 and the director of the movie, Greta Gerwig, was also snubbed.

Although Margot and Greta were snubbed for the hit flick, Ryan Gosling, who played the role of Ken did receive a nod. And America Ferrera was also recognised for her role in the flick.

Shortly after, Ryan Gosling spoke out and said that he was "honoured" to have been nominated, but added: "There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie."
And since Ryan spoke out, America - who plays Gloria in the flick - has also shared her thoughts on Margot and Greta's snubs. "I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated," the Ugly Betty star said.
She added: "Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. […] What Margot achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable. One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look."
Reacting to America speaking out, one person on X said: "Well, it’s a shame that her two coworkers were snubbed, I hope that America Ferrera is incredibly happy about her nomination without having to feel guilty about anything. She more than deserves this honor."
Another added: "Now that’s mother standing up for her people!!!" While a third penned: "The fact that America was asked about other people not being nominated when she herself was nominated and people actually celebrating this response is crazy."
