Biggest Oscars snubs - Charlie Chaplin to Angela Bassett looking crestfallen
Today the nominations were announced for the 96th annual Academy Awards, which comes more than a month before the Oscars take place in Los Angeles in March.
But as the nominations were unveiled, social media angrily reacted to those who were shamelessly snubbed by the Academy. From the 2023 box office smash hit Barbie being snubbed more than once, to Leonardo DiCaprio also missing out on a nod - film buffs are less than impressed.

The disappointment from today's nominations doesn't come as a surprise, however, with the Oscars often disappointing film fans due to the Academy frequently snubbing big movies and movie stars. Snubs are not new, and some of the biggest names in the industry were never formally recognised for their great achievements.
Alfred Hitchcock

In 1961 the Best Director gong went to Billy Wilder for The Apartment rather than Hitchcock for his famous horror movie Psycho. He did get a gong though, and this came on March 7, 1979, when he became the seventh recipient of the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award.
Charlie Chaplin
Chaplin did win two gongs, but not specifically for his work (UIG via Getty Images)Charlie Chaplin was ignored by the Academy for much of his career, although he did receive two honorary awards. Charlie scooped a gong in 1929 at the start of his career, and another at the end in 1972.
Although Charlie was honoured with two gongs from the Academy, neither of them specifically for his work on City Lights, Modern Times, and The Great Dictator.
Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn was best known for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters, with her fast becoming one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s.
But despite Marilyn known for her roles in Gentleman Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, How to Marry a Millionaire, and Some Like it Hot, she was never awarded an Oscar, nor did she ever receive a nomination.
ET: The Extra-Terrestrial
ET lost out big time (Universal Pictures)The iconic film ET: The Extra-Terrestrial was nominated for nine Oscars at the 55th Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Gandhi won that award, but its director, Richard Attenborough, said at the time: "I was certain that not only would E.T. win, but that it should win. It was inventive, powerful, wonderful. I make more mundane movies."
The movie did however win four Academy Awards: Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects.
Brokeback Mountain
Brokeback Mountain didn't do as well as it should have, according to many (PA)The hit gay romance starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain was pipped to the post for the 2006 Best Picture Oscar by the movie Crash, which starsred Thandie Newton and Matt Dillon.
Met with homophobia and heterosexism, there was even a theory that claimed Academy members didn’t bother to watch the movie because it wasn’t to their taste, hence the lack of wins. Although it did nab the gong for Best-Adapted Screenplay and Best Director for Ang Lee.
Shawshank Redemption

The movie was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Morgan Freeman), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Original Score. And as we mentioned, it did not win in any category.
We Don’t Talk About Bruno
Disney didn't submit the hit (DISNEY)The catchy song from the animated musical Encanto was not among the nominated entries in the Best Original Song category. It was a huge shock when this track didn't scoop up a gong in 2022, but this wasn't because they were snubbed per se.
It is reported that Disney didn’t submit the catchy song for contention, and Disney submitted its list of potential contenders before the hit became a No. 1 phenomenon and completely took over social media.
Barbie's Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig
Fans are fuming over Margot's snub (Warner Bros.)Yes, of course, we had to include this recent snub in our round-up of the most shocking. After all, it seems that the whole world is gobsmacked that Barbie actress Margot Robbie got "robbed" amid the 2024 Oscars nominations.
Margot received no recognition for playing Barbie in the hit flick of the summer of 2023. Not only this but the director of Barbie, Greta Gerwig, was also snubbed. And what made fans of the movie even angrier was the fact that Ryan Gosling, who played the role of Ken did receive a nod.
"Ken getting nominated and not Barbie is honestly so fitting for a film about a man discovering the power of patriarchy in the Real World," penned one person on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Touching on Greta's snub, one person said: "Every year - the Oscars snub women behind the camera - but Greta Gerwig - come on!!!!! The Oscars really hate women."
Ellen Burstyn losing to Glenda Jackson
In 1973 Ellen Burstyn’s reaction to her Oscar loss left the world gobsmacked when she looked a little stoic. The movie starlet was nominated for the Best Actress gong for her role in The Exorcist, but it was Glenda Jackson who ended up scooping the gong for her role in A Touch of Class.
But the problem? Well, Glenda wasn't even in attendance. And, when the winner was announced, Ellen could be seen raising her eyebrows and visibly mouthing “OK… what a surprise”.
Angela Bassett's crestfallen reaction to losing
Angela looked upset last year (ABC)Angela Bassett had a very sour reaction at last year's Academy Awards when she lost out on the Best Supporting Actress gong to Jamie Lee Curtis. The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star was even brutally branded a "sore loser" by viewers tuning into the ceremony.
Looking more than disappointed, Angela looked stoic and crestfallen when the winner was announced - and fans were not impressed. "Everyone wants to win. However most won’t. That’s life. And sore loser is never a good look," penned one person. While someone else said: "All you saying Angela Bassett should’ve won over Jamie lee… her reaction was poor sportsmanship."
