Scott McTominay has revealed that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has strict rules about appearance to maintain discipline at the club.

The Dutchman has previously claimed that he inherited a squad with a "no good culture" after being appointed as the permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last summer.

The lack of discipline and poor mentality of players at the club has been cited as a major factor behind their recent struggles, with Ten Hag currently under pressure himself after overseeing a poor start to the season.

But McTominay, who has emerged as a key figure for United this year, has lauded the former Ajax chief and his methods, which include ensuring every player is kitted out in matching tracksuits.

During an interview with the High Performance Podcast, McTominay said of Ten Hag: “The manager is so demanding and he’s got so many high standards that the whole squad have to comply with, which I think is brilliant. I think that’s the way it should be, especially when you play for a club like Man United.

“We all have to act accordingly and be professional in terms of everything we do. He’s massive on his timings, massive on everyone looking the same, wearing the same tracksuits and clothes. All that contributes toward a good team, so no one is a big ego, everyone is in it together and pushing the right way.”

While McTominay is full of praise for Ten Hag's rules, not everybody has been won over by his hardline approach. TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor previously hit out at the strict guidelines on punctuality, food and conditioning tests shortly after Ten Hag's arrival from Amsterdam.

He felt Ten Hag was "overdoing it" with said rules back in July 2022, saying: "The rules Ten Hag is giving are normal rules. Players will always get weighed once or twice a week and it's normal to keep tabs on what you eat. With the drinking, the players don't do it anyway. So when he's come in and given out these rules, the players are probably thinking, 'We do this anyway, it's nothing new to us'.

"I feel like that's overkill, [the ban on] personal chefs, they're going to cook them healthy food. Maybe just tell them these are the sort of foods you've got to eat."

He added: "I think he's overdoing it a bit now because players are going to have personal chefs. They can cook healthy food and they know what foods to feed players, so why would they need to take food from the training ground?"
