Man Utd transfer news live - Antony and Sancho sales, Casemiro future in doubt

Manchester United have a new chief executive, with Spanish chief Omar Berrada quitting Manchester City in a clear sign of intent from INEOS.

Berrada has been appointed by the Glazers with assistance from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United fans will hope this marks the start of a new era. United have been quiet so far in the January transfer window, but there are still 10 days left to do business.

The rumour mill continues to swirl, with Erik ten Hag linked with a reunion with his former Ajax star Brian Brobbey. A centre-back is also a possibility, with Bayern Munich star Matthijs de Ligt and Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo among those linked to the club.

Robin van Persie's reaction to Sir Alex Ferguson retiring just a year after signing him

Robin van Persie was "almost in tears" after hearing that Sir Alex Ferguson was leaving his post as Manchester United manager in 2013.

Speaking to ex-Chelsea star John Obi Mikel on the Obi One Podcast, Rio Ferdinand explained: "The WhatsApp messages started getting crazy the night before the news hit the media. And in the morning, everyone is texting each other that the manager is leaving.

"I’ll never forget the moment. The air almost sapped out of the changing room, and everyone just looked at each other." The former West Ham and Leeds defender continued, recalling how Van Persie reacted to the news.

"I remember that Robin Van Persie signed because the manager was there, and I remember looking at him straight away, and he was almost in tears. Although he’s had hardly a season with the manager, he adored the gaffer. The guy was gobsmacked."

Hannibal's dire Sevilla start

Hannibal Mejbri has traded Manchester United for Sevilla for the rest of the season - but his loan spell didn't get off to the best start yesterday.

Sevilla were pasted 5-1 by La Liga leaders Girona yesterday. Hannibal started on the bench before coming on and getting a customary yellow card within minutes of arriving onto the pitch for his new team.

Berbatov's Sancho prediction

Dimitar Berbatov believes Jadon Sancho will only play for Manchester United again if Erik ten Hag's time in charge comes to an end.

"Jadon Sancho came on for Dortmund and got an assist, which is a great way to return to his old club," Berbatov told Betfair. "This is how football can work out sometimes.

"You can be really good in one league or in a different country, then go to the English Premier League and it just doesn't work out for you.

"Dortmund is a good move for Sancho because he's returned to familiar surroundings with friends around him.

"He's made a good start with them and it'll be great if he goes back to his previous form.

"But if you're asking me if that'll get him back in Ten Hag's good books, I don't think so.

"I only see Sancho playing for Manchester United again if the manager changes.

"If Sancho does well at Dortmund, he should be in contention for a place at Euro 2024."

Gary Neville reacts to Gabby Agbonlahor's bold claim Nemanja Vidic was "overrated"

Gary Neville has offered a brutal response to Gabby Agbonlahor's assessment of legendary Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic.Speaking on talkSPORT earlier this season, the 37-year-old noted that the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Vincent Kompany and John Terry were all better players. Not controversial in itself, but Agbonlahor appeared dismissive of Vidic's abilities.

A social media account highlighted that Agbonlahor suffered a difficult time in front of goal when facing off against Manchester United. Of course, Vidic's time in the division crossed over with with the bulk of Agbonlahor's Premier League career.

When the opportunity arose, it appears Neville was quite happy to hit back at the former Villa goalscorer. The Sky Sports pundit was happy to repost the information illustrating the former Watford and Sheffield Wednesday loanee's struggles.

Stretford Paddock said on X: "So Gabby Agbonlahor has said Vidic is the most overrated defender in PL history and he didn't find it hard to play against him. Just a reminder that Agbonlahor played #MUFC 22 times in his career and won once, couldn't have been that easy then."

United offered Araujo update

United may be interested in Barcelona ace Ronald Araujo, but the Red Devils have been told he's not up for sale.

Camp Nou chief Deco explained to Marca: "He is one of Barça's key players of the present and future. We are not considering selling him, we want him to be happy and this is shown on a day-to-day basis. There is nothing to talk about. The important thing is that he is here with hunger and heart."

ICYMI - Greenwood out of Getafe's price range

Mason Greenwood has been performing well for Getafe, but the Spanish club are unlikely to be able to sign him permanently when his loan deal expires at the end of the season.

Goal reports that Getafe have the third-smallest budget in La Liga, with gives them a maximum wage bill of €40milion (£36m). Greenwood is worth at least €40m by himself. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have both been credited with interest in the forward in recent months.

McTominay commitment

The Scotland international has been on the High Performance Podcast and discussed the one criticism that frustrates him more than others.

"It's hard," McTominay said when asked about criticism about his commitment. "If someone is questioning that about me, I don't like it and I don't want it to happen again.

Whereas if they're saying opinions like other things like he's not very good, he doesn't do this or that, that's fine. That's an opinion and you can take it with a pinch of salt.

The only opinions that matter are those from your manager, family and teammates, in my opinion. When you get into the first-team, it's hard for young players because they're going into the spotlight.

"But there comes a time when it becomes normal and part and parcel of being a football at a huge club."

Jorge Mendes on Joao Neves

Jorge Mendes has provided the latest to Portuguese outlet record on Joao Neves. The Benfica midfielder has been linked to Old Trafford as a possible successor to Casemiro.

Benfica have two players who are highly coveted: Joao Neves and Antonio Silva. Then their president, Rui Costa, will have to decide when he’s ready to consider a deal. It’s always the club’s decision. I can take the proposals and the conditions.

Yes, there have been situations in which any of them would have had offers if the door had been open. The players will stay at Benfica until the end of the season, that’s for sure, and then Rui Costa will decide what’s best to do. And then, as with all the other players: meetings, talks and, when the time is right, the decision will be made.

Swap deal

Reports suggest that Inter Milan were interested in a swap deal that would see Denzel Dumfries arrive at Old Trafford while Aaron Wan-Bissaka head in the opposite direction.

The Dutch defender has only 18 months remaining on his deal and is currently in a stand-off over new terms with Inter needing to balance their finances for Italy's financial fair play rules. Wan-Bissake's deal also only runs until 2025 but United appear to be uninterested in such a deal.

Neville shuts down Agbonlahor's Vidic criticism

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville knows exactly how good Nemanja Vidic was at his peak, and he has taken Gabby Agbonlahor to task over claims some of the Premier League's current crop are better than the Serbian.

"Vidic wasn't all that! Van Dijk is better than Vidic. 100%" talkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor said. "(Virgil) Van Dijk & (Vincent) Kompany over Vidic. JT ( John Terry ) and Rio (Ferdinand) are the best."

However, Neville shared stats outlining Agbonlahor's record from his playing days against United, with just one victory to the former Aston Villa star's name.

Greenwood due back at Old Trafford before decision on future

Mason Greenwood will return to Manchester United before the club decides on his next move, according to Goal.

Over the summer, United insisted the England international would continue his career away from the club, laying the framework for a loan move to Getafe.

The Spanish side appear to have been priced out of a permanent move for the forward, but remain in conversation with United over a potential extension of the loan deal for a second season.

That may still happen, but United - who have made changes behind the scenes in the last month - are expected to let new hires assess the situation before rushing into any decisions.

PSG plotting talks over Yoro

Leny Yoro was strongly linked with Manchester United over the autumn, but they could miss out on the French prospect amid interest from clubs still in the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain are one such team, with Foot Mercato (via Get French Football News) reporting that the Ligue 1 big-hitters are set for talks over the centre-back this week.

Yoro, 18, has established himself in Lille's first team this season as they fight to return to the Champions League.

Sancho's 'inside information' over Dortmund return

Jadon Sancho has opened up on the moment Marco Reus set him up to return to Borussia Dortmund from Manchester United.

"There’s a video clip from Las Vegas where [Reus] told me to go back to Dortmund," Sancho told club media.

"He told me: 'Whenever you’re ready, I’ll be here'. That's exactly how it was, that's insider information."

Sancho set up a goal on his second Dortmund debut against Darmstadt, and was handed a start on Sunday in a comfortable 4-0 win away at Koln.

Barcelona's hands-off warning on Araujo

Manchester United are among the teams said to be sniffing around Ronald Araujo, with Bayern Munich also keen on the Barcelona defender, but it appears he won't be going anywhere soon.

"He is one of Barça's key players of the present and future," Barcelona sporting director Deco said of the Uruguayan.

"We are not considering selling him, we want him to be happy and this is shown on a day-to-day basis.

"There is nothing to talk about. The important thing is that he is here with hunger and heart."

Ten Hag identifies Martial replacement

Erik ten Hag is a fan of Ajax striker Brian Brobbey and has tried to sign him for United once before, in the summer of 2022. The 21-year-old snubbed him then, but Ten Hag isn’t put off.

Having already signed Lisandro Martinez and Antony from Ajax, the United boss wants to repeat the trick and ESPN reports that Brobbey is viewed as a good replacement for Anthony Martial, who will leave in June when his contract expires.

He has 15 goals and four assists in 26 appearances for Ajax this season and has shone in spite of their poor form as a team. A move in the January window hasn’t been ruled out, but a summer transfer appears much more likely.

How Berrada will change Man Utd recruitment

Omar Berrada is joining Manchester United as the club's new chief executive. He arrives from Manchester City, where he leaves behind an impressive body of work.

One of United's biggest problems in recent years has been their patchy recruitment record. So how will Berrada change things? David McDonnell has penned a piece on that very subject. You can read it here.

United look to Saudi Arabia to offload flop wingers

Manchester United are reportedly trying to sell Jadon Sancho and Antony to clubs in the Saudi Pro League after admitting defeat with the expensive wingers.

Sancho, a £73million signing in 2021, is back on loan with Borussia Dortmund, but United want to find a permanent deal for him. Antony, meanwhile, cost £86m in 2022 and has struggled for form since arriving from Ajax.

The Evening Standard reports that United are hoping Saudi clubs will provide an exit route for both wingers, as well as fellow highly-paid stars Casemiro and Raphael Varane.

Ferdinand explains Ferguson transfer disappointment

Rio Ferdinand says that Sir Alex Ferguson's failure to sign Ronaldinho for Manchester United was a major disappointment - even though he got Cristiano Ronaldo instead.

“I remember when Cristiano Ronaldo signed we went on tour to Lisbon and he was actually lucky that we signed him,” he said on The Obi One podcast. “It was only on the disappointment of not signing Ronaldinho that summer.

“I remember we were going to sign Ronaldinho but he chose to leave PSG for Barcelona. The manager was absolutely devastated. Then on the tour he went to Sporting Lisbon to open the stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo plays and the rest is history.”

Ex-Man Utd player set for deal

Former Manchester United player Josh Harrop is poised to sign for Cheltenham Town.

The 28-year-old midfielder came through the club's academy, but only made one senior appearance for United, scoring against Crystal Palace on the last day of the 2016/17 season.

He left for Preston after that goal and has since played for Ipswich, Fleetwood and Northampton. Gloucestershire Live report that he's been training with Cheltenham, who are ready to give him a contract.

Mason Greenwood has been performing well for Getafe, but the Spanish club are unlikely to be able to sign him permanently when his loan deal expires at the end of the season.

Choupo-Moting 'open' to United move

Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is open to joining Manchester United this month, according to reports in France.

The 34-year-old former Stoke flop has started just three games all season and wants a change of scenery. United are looking to find back-up to Rasmus Hojlund and could go for another Wout Weghorst-style loan move.

My view is that this transfer sounds extremely far-fetched and unlikely. With INEOS just about to arrive officially, I can't see United green-lighting such a short-term move.

Hannibal loan starts badly

Hannibal Mejbri has traded Manchester United for Sevilla for the rest of the season - but his loan spell didn't get off to the best start yesterday.

Sevilla were pasted 5-1 by La Liga leaders Girona yesterday. Hannibal started on the bench before coming on and getting a customary yellow card within minutes of arriving onto the pitch for his new team.

United youngster to leave on loan

Dan Gore is poised to leave the club on loan, with five League One teams expressing an interest in the 19-year-old. Gore has broken into the United first-team this season, making two appearances, but he needs more regular action.

Port Vale, Bolton Wanderers, Blackpool, Shrewsbury Town and Fleetwood Town have all expressed an interest in the midfielder and it seems that Vale have won the argument.

Casemiro's future in doubt

Casemiro cost Manchester United £60million just 18 months ago, but the change of leadership at the club means he could be on the way out.

The Daily Star reports that he is not in the club's long-term plans. United's new hierarchy believes it will be best to move from him in the summer and could terminate his deal to make that happen.

That is a clear sign of intent from INEOS, who reportedly mentioned Casemiro specifically as the type of deal they would never do when holding a meeting with club chiefs last year.

Brobbey 'not in contact' with Ten Hag

Brian Brobbey has been a name linked with Manchester United on several occasions.

That is partly because, back in September 2022, he was asked where he wanted to play one day by ESPN. Brobbey replied: "Manchester United." And it is partly because of his links with Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

Sky Sports reported over the weekend that United were interested again in the 21-year-old striker, who has 13 goals and four assists in 25 matches across all competitions this season. The report said Ten Hag was driving the interest and had been in touch with his former player.

That was shot down by Brobbey himself yesterday. Asked about the rumours, he said: "I am not in contact with Erik ten Hag anymore. We used to text through Whatsapp, but I think Erik is busy. I have a new number as well, so..."
